I've been watching for updates on this thread since it was first started. I'm so excited for you, please keep us updated. I'm sorry that people are nagging at you. I have to say, I'm not paticularly happy that this breeding is going on, just because of the amount of shelter dogs that need homes. But every breeder starts somewhere, and kudos to you for for really trying and seeking answers to all of your questions. That alone sets you apart from the majority of BYB's. Your Chi is absolutely adorable, and I can't wait to see the puppies. Best of luck =)

RE: My vet told me anywhere from 600 to 700. I thought that was very high. So I'm hoping for her to go this weekend. I keep telling her but she's not listening to me Yes, we have had no signs. ONly she sleeps alot and yesterday and today the stringy discharge. What is that exactly and what does that mean???
They normally will sleep alot while the babies get into positions. Stringy discharge is also normal before hand. Just make sure it is clear. If it gets dark brown or green, get to your vet immediatly. Or if you find a puddle of it. I read on one of your post that her temp was 97 something? Be careful and dont let it go too long. If she is mopey, or starts shaking a little like she is cold, you will need to go ahead and take her in before the pups or her get in trouble. I hope everything is going well with her and you. Please keep us posted. We are all pulling for you! :)

Well things did not go as well as planned. Zoey started labor at 3am Sunday morning. She was able to pass her water bag but then from there on nothing happened. Paged my vet and he called me back and stated we needed to come in and he'd induce labor and if that didn't work he'd have to do a section. We ended up taking her in and the injections didn't work and he had to do the section and sent us home to wait.
Well, we got a call around 10am. Not good news. Zoey had went into cardiac arrest and her heart stopped on the table. Basicaly she had past away. (Its still so hard writing this!)
He acted quick and was able to revive her, she was gone maybe 3 minutes but had also lost a good amount of blood. To make a horrible story short, we were able to go get her tonight and all her pups. They are all under observation. Everyone goes back to see him tomorrow (Monday)

Aw. Sad news. I hope she'll be ok. I'm surprised the vet let you take them all home! See, that's why I don't breed! Too much risk among other things and with chihuahuas it's even harder :( I could never risk losing my dog.

Wow, how unimaginably scary. =( I'm so sorry you both went through this, and I'm happy that all 5 of your babies came through. It's great that she is taking to feeding them, at least.
I feel bad that you had to learn the risks of breeding first-hand, the hard way. I definitely understand why you're spaying her. Breeding can be really heart-breaking. It just is not worth losing your much-loved little girl to produce puppies.

She had a weal uterus, which is why she wasn't pushing much. What almost took her was the anestisia (I know its spelled wrong)
Now I'm petrified to spay her, although I want to. I just don't know if I could handle having her put out again, when she couldn't handle it this time.
Zoey is doing ok. Resting. She is eating. Not a bunch, but eating. I can only imagine what she feels.

Hey, chibree. I haven't been on all day. Wow, what a horrible experience for you and zoey. Im glad everything is all right though. Just to ask a quick question. Did they use intraveinous anesthetic or gas? The reason I am asking is because the gas is a lot easier on them than being on an iv anesthetic. Just wanted to let you know for when or if you get her spayed. Wow what cute pups. CONGRATS. You should be very proud of yourself and Zoey. Its great to hear that she is being a good mom. Don't worry she will be back to her old self before you know it. They have a way of bouncing back really quick. Again CONGRATS on the new babies and after this ordeal i think you should keep 'em all :D

I am so glad your bitch survived.
Whelping can be very dangerous, especially for small girls like Chis.
THIS is why we discourage those from breeding their pets.
I am glad she made it through the surgery, and hope all goes well with the bringing up of the babies.
Once the puppies are a few weeks old, if you would like help with a contract that requires spay/neuter of the puppies, let me know. I have several good ones I can pass on to you.
With 4 puppies you need to keep a close eye on her for eclampsia. Talk to your vet about what to look for, or do a web search. Eclampsia in small bitches can also be deadly...
Red_ACD_for_me
07-10-2006, 07:23 AM
Very scary! I am glad she survived that, my heart dropped when I read about Zoey. It's too bad they didn't just spay her while she was already under so you don't have to go through it again. I would get another opinion from another vet if once she is strong again to go through the spaying. How many pups are you keeping? I hope you never ever breed a bitch again, it is way to risky and shouldn't be taken lightly. Good luck and keep ud updated!
What a scary experience for you! I'm so glad Zoey and puppies are ok, they are adorable.

A word of advice.
Bottle feed the STRONGEST PUPPIES, and let the smaller one have as much mom's milk AS POSSIBLE.
OR, express her milk and bottle feed that.
NO formula can compare with what she has.

I've tried. She's just not latching on very well. I take the others away and give her one on one time. So I'm supplimenting her per my vets advise. he'd like to see her take 2 tablesppons from me per day.
Can I say how satisfying and rewarding it is to see her try to eat with me and manage to get some and produce a full belly? her little belly will fill up and look so much better!
I know I'm going to fall in love :)

My Vet delivered her, and she's been back to him twice and we go again on Monday. I'm feeding Mothers 1st Milk. My Vet suggested I supplement her.
I have a 30 year breeder that is feeding 2 pups of her own right now round the clock and has surrogate moms with milk who offered to take her for me, but after discussing with my vet he would like to see her stay with her mom since its only been since Sunday and she is not going downhill.
