Hey all! I have a 3 and 1/2 month old pup.. and he humps things. My other dogs head, his toys.. thankfully not people.. yet!

Sometimes he'll chew on a toy (his favourite humper) and whine while next to it.. almost like he wants something and doesn't know how to get it? Is this possible at such a young age?

This is actually the first pup I've raised.. my other dog was 3 when I got her so all this puppy stuff is a little new to me..

Any ideas? :)

Alot of the humping with dogs comes from dominance. Is your puppy a smaller breed? This usually occurs with small dogs, who are frustrated with their dominance status.

That's totally normal. :D LOL, it is odd the first few times you see it, I was grossed out, I got Roxy to stop right away.

Is that what you wanted to know? If this behaviour was normal? If so, it is :D

Edie (GSD posted at the same time) It can be associated with dominance but I think your pup is pretty young... It's possible but I doubt it.

Call your vet, and make the neuter appointment as early as they will allow you to do it.

Heehee.. It is good to know it's normal. :p The little guy is a lab mix so I guess he'll be a med-lg size dog.
I don't really think it's a dominance thing.. mostly cause.. well.. it comes out.. you know.. IT! It's so weird.. I mean I assumed it was normal.. it's just that he was so innocent.. and now he's..well.. IT comes out!! :p
I was just a little worried that maybe he'd become an addict or something and even after neutering he'd be obcessed since it started so young..hehehe.. PHEW! :D

It is ok to neuter at an age younger than 6 months?
I was wondering about that.. since he is completly 'intact' already.. wow.. that would be nice.. :)

It is ok to neuter younger yes. Will your vet do it? You'll have to ask.
Yeah I was disgusted by the lipstick with Boone too. I just distracted him when he started humping.
My boyfriend thought it was hilarious and just said that he takes after him haha.
He was neutered at 6 months and no longer humps, unless he's at the dog park, and he's trying to be dominant, that you can't stop really it's a way of them figuring out who will be in charge.

My 14 wk old puppy tends to get "friendly" with his stuffed animals lately, but I don't tolerate it at all. This is one habit that I don't allow because there is nothing more embarrassing than your dog getting friendly with a guest's foot. I shake a can of pennies very loudly when he tries it, and he hasn't done it for about a week now. It's normal behaviour, but my dogs know it is unacceptable. :)

Hahaha.. a monkey lover eh? :p

I clap my hands really loud whenever I catch Squid at it.. as soon as I do that he ends the deed.. but he still goes back to it when he knows I've turned my head.. heehee

Me thinks he'll be getting neutered quite soon if at all possible.. ;)

Gunner gets "excited" when he eats now. Not all the time, but at night with the big meal he usually does. It started 2 nights ago. He sits down, starts eating and....well....it just comes on out and says "hi" to whoever is in the room.:o

LOL, yeah, my little guy is attracted to stuffed animals. It's really funny to watch but we are trying to discourage it nonetheless. :p His favorite is a stuffed dog (go figure) that I've had since I was about 5 years old. It's such a nice surprise when he drags that thing in front of company and shows us all how much he loves it....boys will be boys :D

You think that is bad, Cowgurl?

My dad has a chi mix. She is about 7 years old now. She is addicted to humping stuffed animals.

The kicker is, she was never taught to stop, so she just hunches away when you tell her to stop. She looked at me one time like "Don't you SEE I am BUSY?? Come on... almost there......." hahaha

I personaly think some dogs hump out of sexual frustration, not just dominance issues.

My old roommate had a small dog that would hump things and ejaculate. Now that is sexual, not dominance.

As a woman, I'm sort of fascinated/repulsed by the dog's boner. My boy is 5 months old and he hasn't started humping anything, thank god, but the pink worm comes out of it's shell every now and again for no good reason at all. I suppose this is like teenage boys who get erections for no reason (so I've been told) but it doesn't make any sense to me. Girls aren't like that (well, some aren't). I'm getting him fixed in the next month or so (waiting until he's 6 months) so I suspect he won't really get on the humping train.
