Only a thorough scale and polish by a veterinarian will remove pre-existing tartar. I find that raw meaty bones do the best job at keeping teeth clean.

Any physical abrasive scouring of the teeth will reduce the RATE at which plaque forms on the teeth, but sadly will not stop it completely. Plaque is actually soft but develops into hard tartar over time with the deposition of calcium salts, food particles etc. So bones etc that exert some abrasive action on the teeth might help but are not a full proof solution to the problem:mad:

Actually according to the research of Dr. Lonsdale, the "flossing" action of raw meaty bones is quite effective for the removal of biofilm - which is the soft precursor of plaque.

How intensive the buildup on the teeth is depends on many different factors, including genetic predisposition. Some dogs can eat poor quality food all their lives and still maintain nice, clean teeth, others need help even when eating a completely raw diet including plenty of bones.

Many of my clients whose dogs needed some extra help have had excellent results with the homeopathic remedy Fragaria Vesca, 6X, or even better 3C pellets. One pellet per day for up to one month until tartar is significantly reduced. As a preventative from there on out one pill, once weekly.

I'm always late on these things.. but in addition to getting bones and getting his teeth brushed, we use Wysong's Dentratreat on some of Buddy's meals. He has great looking teeth right now.

I use RMBs. I never have a problem with plaque NOR do I brush their teeth. I just let the bones do their thing.

IF they do get a little plaque I just use a piece of gauze to clean it off. If it has hardened, I use a regular dental scale to help take the tartar off.
