Hi all, its my first post, but I could really use some help on this issue. my dog is about 3 years old, a whippet/greyhound mix. for about 7 hours she has been acting very strange. at first I thought she was just playful, she wouldnt stop running around and rolling over. then I noticed she was trying to scratch her nose, and was rubbing it against anything she could find. I discovered a bump on her nose, its visible and raises noticeably off the hairline

She seems to have one on her front paw as well, but I cant find it, she is constantly licking her paw. She is my first dog, and ive had her since she was a puppy so i am still new to this. I decided that if she is still having problems tommorow morning I will take her to the vet, but knowing whats wrong now will help me sleep better. The bumps arent really a circle, but more so in an up/down length.

I cant figure out what could have happened, I live in an apartment, very clean, she is mostly an indoors dog and the only grass in the area is a golf course that she barely ever wants to step foot on. Shes only been outside once since the bumps appeared. Sorry if im going on and on, but im trying to be as detailed as I can. It hurts me to see her like this, she is constantly alert and moves any chance she can. trying to lick her nose every few seconds.

Could be an allergic reaction. You should take her to the vet. Especially since she is so uncomfortable.

There are 24-hour vets. Or you could have gone earlier.

I am going to look for a 24 hour vet, i googled the allergic reaction for dogs. and I found:

# Moderate. Urticaria is a moderate vascular reaction of the skin marked by hives or wheals and rapid swelling and redness of the lips, around the eyes, and in the neck region. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis and is considered life-threatening. This is the most common reaction in dogs.

Which seems to be exactly what she is having. they appear to be hives and they are coming up all over her legs/head now.

Could also be a bite of some sort...but I'd lean more to an allergic reaction.

Tira, one of our Labs, swallowed a penny when she was younger and her right eye was swollen and she had lots of bumps on her nose. They almost looked like bites, and she kept rubbing her head. She acted normal except for the rubbing of her head on the floor or her paw. When she passed the penny, her butt was swollen as well. We took her to the vet the day we saw the bumps and swelling and she was given a cortizone shot. The vet said it looked like an allergic reaction and asked if anything was different in the house. He asked if she could have gotten ahold of any pennies that were pre 1984. We said, yes, it's possible.
Long story short, she was allergic to a metal that was in pennies made before 1984 and that's what made her break out and swell. You can put an ice pack on your dogs face if she'll let you, to help bring swelling down until you get her to the vet. She definitely needs a vet though.

Sounds like a bug bite to me of some sort, or possibly a skin fungus?

cowgurl - I don't think a bug bite would spread unless the dog is covered in ants...which would really suck and could be dangerous if enough venom is introduced into the system. I don't think fungus usually spreads that quickly either. JMO though. :)

Took her to vet, they gave her anahistemines(sp) and steroid injections for allergic reaction. The vet said it looked like she had been stung by a bee or something similiar. Thanks for the help everyone, she is feeling much better now, and I can finally rest :)

I just said bug bite because my puppy got attacked by fire ants a few weeks ago and he had the exact same symptoms. I said fungus because there is a fungus that effects horses that has those symptoms as well. I don't know if dogs can get it, but I just thought I'd suggest it. Just trying to help.

Well, shes still having problems it seems. she doesnt have hives anymore, but she is still going crazy trying to itch her nose and leg. She has like 3 red circles on her stomach, and then some long red marks near them. shes starting to cry every so often im guessing because she cant get comfortable.

I'm going to take her to the vet again just incase. I gave her a bath which seemed to have helped her calm down but I cant stand seeing her like this. i'm not sure if shes fine and its just the steroids she was given or what. i dont know if its just something that will take a few days to go away or not.
