My boss mentioned to me today that a customer of our other store has to give up their Boston Terrier/Pug cross, and she mentioned that she thought I'd be a good home for it. I've been batting around the idea of a dog for a long time now (I don't yet have one!) and I keep deciding not too because my dream dog is just TOO much right now (a Newf). Does anyone have any idea what a of this mix would be like? I've met quite a few Boston Terriers, and quite a few Pugs, and to be honest, neither one has ever particularly peaked my interest, and it really is drastically different from my IDEAL dog... But I'm considering it anyways, and doing my research. He's male, neutered, and I think he's still under a year old (but I could be wrong).
Any info or experiences will be helpful, although I know for a mix it's difficult to judge which traits will have come through from which parents...

Can you go meet the dog and spend some time with it? I think that would be the best way to get to know the dog and see if it is right for you.

Of course I would do that if I consider this any further. I just found out about this today and know pretty much only the basics about both kinds of dogs, and I'm not the kind of person to go into this lightly, so I'm just doing preliminary research :)

first i'd be extermely cautious with health issues
they are both snub-nosed breeds, which can effect them
i love both breeds!
pugs do shed alot!
bostons are quite energetic!!!
pugs have boogie eyes too if you no what i mean, which can have health issues!
i would definetly go and see the dog and i would be interested to see how this mix looks lol!

My biggest concern right now is the Boston half ;) They're a bit too high energy for me... but that's some thing I'd need to meet the dog to judge!

if you get a pug/boston the chances are it will have a very snub nose, if in that case then you will probably find it will tire easy

My friend has a Boston Terrier...it is quite energetic, but with walks (my friend walks her a lot...anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, I'd guess) and playtime, she's pretty calm. And she runs around inside, too.
I had a Pug, and he had the sweetest disposition. Very loving and cuddly. I think the Bostons have more energy, but that wouldn't have hurt any. The Pug was a couch potato. If it's over a year old, he's probably starting to calm down some from his puppy hyperness, too. I guess you won't know until you meet him and spend some time with him.

In the designer dog world, this mix would be called a "Bugg". They have some pictures of them on DogBreedInfo.Com here is the link:

That should give you an idea of what it might look like.:)

I've met different kinds of pugs. One was calm and quiet the other was always bouncing up on you, had high pitched barking and would occasionally run in circles. The boston terriers I've met were very nice, quiet and sweet.

Personally, I like Bostons. They're really cute, energetic and pretty intelligent.
But if you don't really like Bostons or Pugs, I'm not sure if it'd be the right dog for you. What are you looking for in a dog?
Would it be possible to spend some time with the dog before committing to it? Maybe have a two or three day trial first?

Thanks for all the fast replies everyone!! :D
I keep going back and forth everytime I consider getting a dog. I could handle a smaller dog like this right now, but I do want my Newfie. Part of me just wants to hold out until the time is right for my dream dog. *sigh* It's so hard! How do you know?!
Well, if you're not sure you're ready to get a dog, you should definitely decide on that first. It will take a certain amount of work and time, but not as much as if it were a puppy!!
As for not being your dream dog, we were just talking about that tonight. We all had an idea of what we wanted in a dog and which breeds would best fit us and our lifestyles. We, then, decided to look at the pound and on Petfinder.com for awhile and see if anything seemed a good match. If we could find an unwanted dog that fit us, we could give it a home. We saw a puppy on Petfinder that looked like he would be the right size for us and decided to go take a look. We ended up bringing him home. He does not at all fit the description that any of us had when we were starting to think about getting a dog....personality, activity level, and size are all different than we had in mind.
That was our conversation today.....about how we didn't even know what kind of dog would be the right match for us after all, because our current dog is, in some ways, the opposite of what we were looking for, yet he's perfect for us. Obviously, we fell in love!!
