so my friend is getting her first dog and she is really excited and just wants to get a dog!! but she lives in an apartment and it has to be under 30 lbs so she wants some ideas for breeds. She wants to compete well in Agility and obedience and she "hates" terriers/toys so she doesnt want those dogs (picky I know!) she has been training/leasing a doberman for 4H the last 2 years and loves them but she cant have that large of a dog. She is thinking a Mini Aussie as I have one and she has gotten to play with her a bit and she likes that they are good at agility.... what is your guys' take on this situation? THANX!

I wouldn't go Mini Aussie. My coworker has one, and that dog is just neurotic.
How about a sheltie? They fit the criteria, and are very popular with agility and obedience.
^^^ Second the Sheltie. Only problem I see there with her being in an apartment is that a lot of Shelties really like to bark. Same with Mini Aussies, actually.
How much time does she have to spend with the dog? If she wants a herding breed, I would hope that she is prepared to spend a lot of time with it. These dogs like to have something to do, nothing is worse to a herder than being lazy and bored.
A smaller Border Collie might actually work, especially if she wants to compete. Borders tend to be quieter than Shelties and Aussies but they definitely aren't for everybody... they are neat dogs but they take a lot more getting used to than dogs like Aussies. Borders are hardly canine sometimes.

Greyhounds are good in apartments. When they curl up they are quite small. They are also quiet and make nice couch potatoes. They only require about 20 mins of excercise(they prefer running) a day to be quite happy. I know I owned one..lol. :D

Cocker Spaniels are good apartment dogs.
Not sure about agility but I have had a english/american cross that was as agile as any border I have seen. Smart as all get!
I miss her bunches!

A great choice would be a miniature poodle. This breed excels at obedience work as well as agility and rally. They are a joy to train, can definitely be comedians, love people & other dogs and they don't shed. They do need to be clipped about every 8 wks but if kept in a short clip like my 2 standard poodles maintenance between is really easy. They love to retrieve, swim or cuddle on the couch with their person.:)
I was thinking corgi myself. It's hard to find a good Mini Aussie as too many people focus on the "mini" part and not much else. I meet more of them that look like idiot pomeranian crosses than anything Aussie. The standard for Mini Aussies specifically says they should be judged EXACTLY like Standard Aussies, just 2-5 inches shorter with appropriate weight.

Thanx guys, yea she's a weirdo and she also 'hates' poodles and corgis, doesnt really have a reason she just doesnt... Grey hounds are a little over the weight max other wise she would luv that Idea... Thanx guys Ill throw the options out to her so she thinks everything through!

My house is about the size of an apartment and my Golden is fine with it. Otherwise I'd go Sheltie too.
