So as most of you know Roxy was diagnosed with mild Grade 1, hip dysplasia about a week ago. I've been terribly stressed ever since.

My vet sent her x-rays off to a board surgeon near by and we were awaiting his call. Good news! The ortho said that Roxy definitely doesn't have "normal" hips, but she is so severely mild (lol) that she isn't a candidate for surgery. He just said to keep her on glucosomine/chondroitin and in his expert opinion, we probably won't see any symptoms until later on in life, which is how it usually goes with larger dogs.

My other worry was that she would have to stop doing agility and running off leash. He said that whatever we've been doing with her should continue. Because she's so lean and muscular, it's less stress on the joints, and the muscle helps to hold the joints in place, it gives them support.

*screams* I'm so happy! I've been so stressed the past week. Trying to decide what I would do if the ortho said surgery... no agility.. no running etc.

But she's free! She can be a dog and do all of the things that we enjoy doing together!

Just thought I'd share my happy story! :)

Great news, and yes keeping them thin and active to keep the supporting tissues strong and healthy is the best thing you can do. Many mildly dysplastic dogs never show a symptom when living life like that. Good luck and have fun.

My dog has moderate hip dysplasia and I also went to an ortho for a consult and to discuss the x-rays in detail. He pretty much said that half the GSD dogs on the street probably have way worse hips than my dog and all the stuff your vet said.

Having my dog branded "Dysplastic" from the OFA does scare one at first.

^ I know! I was so worried that she was going to have to get surgery and it would be 6 months of cage rest and it was going to be horrible etc. I pondered not getting the surgery but then my vet had told me she would have a very restricted life. It was *really* stressful. But than when the ortho, the specialist said nope, she's fine, it was a huge relief.

Sometimes a little bit of information kills you though. :)

Jynx Bad news for you, I'm going to be asking for all sorts of tips about agility now :D

The vet says agility will be great for her!

I'll add that I'll be entering my dog in his first agility trial next month. You'll have so much fun!
