Is your "heart breed" what you thought it would be?

Growing up I was "tough". I scraped and I was starting wide receiver on our highschool guys team for 3 year in a row. Including my Rookie year.

I allways loved dogs. The bigger the better in my opinion. I have also allways admired dobes and rotties from afar.

When John said we could have a dog we just didnt have the room for my dobe so I got a beagle. Yes a beagle. Everyone was suprised because a beagle just isnt me. Everyone said I needed a "junk yard dog" :rolleyes: , or at least my friends said that.

I will allways have a beagle around. I am in love with houds. I never thought I would be a hound person. I guess the dogs know the "true" you.

Dont get me wrong I still love my dobe. She's such a "junk yard dog" :p ;)

My "heart breed" is a doberman. I've got a mutt mix, but one day I'll have a farm with massive dobermans running around on it. lol

My thinking as far as dogs went was always The Bigger, The Better!
Now I am in LOVE with the corgi breed. Although I'm sure that I will own many other breeds, I don't think that I'll ever be without a corgi or corgi mix again.

I have always loved GSD's and I have always had a GSD mix and will continue to have a GSD in my life either purebred or mix :D

With our addition of our new dogs, our ESS and Pointer,.. well, I was looking to stray away from cockers, a breed I had had all of my life, but I got the exact opposite. Cockers ARE "my" dog,.. they'll always be my little heart dogs. :)

Nope. I've always admired ACDs, but never thought I would own one as they are definatly not a popular breed around here. I was planning on getting a Boxer at first. I was surprised I ended up with this breed, and now I will never be without one. :D

lol Honestly, no.. I grew up around Shelties my whole life and although the I love breed.. Now that I have Riot.. I could never get another breed .. i may switch in the variety lol but I love the Belgians :)

I have learned SOo much from the breed.. not all the research in the world will truely prepare you for a specific breed!

I've loved Tollers ever since I can remember so I guess they've always been my 'heart breed'. I know I'll always have them.

As a kid, I was always very fond of Collies. I grew up watching Lassie and just loved those majestic looking dogs. Even after I got Ripley I hoped that I'd have a Collie someday.

Instead, after being bitten by the agility bug, I got a Border Collie. Like a Collie, but psychotic. Despite the quirks, this is my dream breed. I love that my dog enjoys working with me and actually looks forward to the time we spend together. He is a velcro dog but he isn't invasive. He's very active but will calm down and sleep when there's nothing to do. He's sooo helpful to me around the house and really is kind of my own little black and white "Lassie". :D

I consider breeds ,a wanted breed of the mind.... a " heart dog " ..is something else. I've owned many Goldens and I loved them all to death... though only 2 were really " heart dogs" ... my Bush and then my Bubba.

I've had Molly since I was 7 years old...and before we got her, I never really thought much about dogs, I just knew I wanted one--no matter what breed lol.

I definitely consider boxers "MY" breed and I don't think I will ever be without one. I may add other breeds into the mix, and who knows, maybe I'll find another breed that I like more (as of now that doesn't even sound possible!)...but I still think I will always have a boxer around.

I like big dogs more, I so badly want a pit bull, or a rottie, or a newfoundland...so I think it would be quite surprising if years from now I realize that smaller dogs are really more for me. :p

I honestly used to picture myself owning a German Sheperd or a Rottie. Now that I''ve owned a Siberian Husky, I adore these guys and will never not have one. They are totally the dog version of me! LOL

I have always wanted a Maltese........It took me 20 yrs to finally be owned by one and the wait was so worth it. My Maltese has turned out to be more than I had anticipated. We are now adding another one before the year is out hopefully. I just adore my little Maltese.

GSD's, not really. I hate dog hair and always said I could never have one becuase they shed too much. Also I felt the bigger the better and I wanted like a great dane or something, but I am happy with GSD's. I also grew up with Dobermans and I love them so much. I will nver be without a GSD and a Dobie.

I grew up with alot of different dogs ranging from Great Danes to labs and everything inbetween.
The last dog was a cocker spaniel mix. She was my heart dog. At the age of 13 I taught her to Roll over on either side by command, shake with both paws the right one first then the left if commanded. Play dead with the sign of a gun with my fingers and hand, Fetch the newspaper which was a hard task for such a small dog. That dog was what I classify as Human smart.
I now have one cocker spaniel who is my Sophie the Sofa dog.

Jims heart dog has always been a lab. I have grown to love and adore them completely. Now my heart dog is a yellow labrador male who is a charactor!

I used to love basset hounds because theyre kinda ugly cute but now i love boxers for the same reason theyre the dog ide probably get but i love my mutt skye and im not planning on trading her for a boxer

Hmm, I've always had mutts and I really think that Buddy is my heart dog, I am sooo in love with that little guy! I grew up with dogs all my life and well, I can't really compare any to Buddy.

But, my heart breed is a Great Dane. Such beautiful creatures, crappy short life spans, but beautiful none the less. I can't wait to have one.

i don't think i've owned enough breeds to be able to say for sure what my "heart breed" truly is. there are so many breeds i'm interested in and hope to own someday.

i have two pit bulls right now. i love these dogs more than anything, but neither one is filling my specific needs right now, so who knows. i suspect i would be happier with a breed designed to work with a person, instead of a terrier.

I've grew up with lurchers and greyhounds and i know i will always have lurchers now, but ever since i can remember i absolutely loved borzoi's and admired evry picture i saw of them, i did lots of research on them, i even went to a dog show to meet them in the flesh and that was crufts. I wanted one so bad, i contacted a breeder that i found and she had a litter due in a months time she told me, so i waited and waited and the due date finally came, i was so excited, i had a name planned and everything. I phoned the breeder that day and the bitch had given birth, BUT heres the heartbreaking news, for me it was anyway.

There was only 1 female in the litter and the breeder said she was keeping it and the males were all booked, i couldn't beleive it, i nearly burst into tears on the phone, for the rest of the day i was in tears, i contacted the breed club in a desperate search for one, and to my luck i found a breeder with a 6 month old for sale because the breeder was keeping a different bitch and not mine, i was so excited and the next day i went to meet my baby, it was love at first sight! She was gorgeous and all the borzois there were, i just couldn't beleive i was surrounded by them.

Since that day we have gone through alot of ups and downs, more downs, but now she is the most loving dog i have and i wouldn't change her for the world. Most definately the borzoi is my heart breed.

I don't really have a heart breed. I'm partial to terrier types of all sizes (especially Wirehaired Dachshund, JRT, Border Terrier and Giant Schnauzer), but I wouldn't go as far as saying the breed is what makes a dog special.

There are about 50 breeds of dogs I'd like to own at some point in my life, which is of course unrealistic :D, and then there are all the cool fuzzy, unique mixed breeds that are equally adorable.

I grew up with a Great Dane, who was a truly awesome dog, but I'm not likely to ever own one again since I have a hard time dealing with their short life span (mine lived to over 11 years old, so I was lucky) and I don't like the look they are bred to here in the US but prefer the German type.

Looking at my current situation it will probably be another 10-15 years or so before things are ideal for the Giant Schnauzer I'd want, so while I'm still living in L.A. in a house with under 2,000 square feet and a yard about half that size, I'll stick to the smaller dogs. I know opinions differ greatly on that, but I don't think such an environment is fair to a large dog.

I haven't owned enough breeds yet to know if the dogs I dream of are truely my heart breed or not. But the dog I have now, my sweet little Chihuahua, is the most amazing dog in the world. I know because of him I will always have a Chihuahua in my life, a breed I never even considered owning before I met him.
If Jesse isn't my heart breed, he's certainly my heart dog.

When I was young I mean 4-5 I had an invisible dog... for months... I drove my family nuts yelling at them saying they sat/steped on it. I was a nutcase I took it everywhere. Then my family got so tired of it they adopted a small breed mutt (its mom had been hit by a car it was 4 weeks.) We raised it as one of us. I grew up with him.his name was Scamper Sadly we had to put him down.. not b/c he was sick but b/c of a jerk kid. I was in 3rd grade when he left me.

It was so sad we didnt get another dog till I was in 5th grade. I did however get hamsters which I pretended were dogs lol. Then we got meisha She was a black lab husky .. bt we had to leave her in our move to USA. She was my moms dog.. Hated anyone else lol.

We moved to Pa and in 8th grade we rescued and fostered a pure bred papered beagle. (he had a flaw someone slammed his tail in a door and it was stuck in an L shape) We called him Kink (lol b/c the kink in his tail) But we found him a home with a farmer who strained him to hunt. 3 days before they picked him up I watched a man abandon a pregnant dog. I adopted her named her Love. A month later she had babies ... and weeks after whelping a man came forward and said he was his and stolen ... Had police report and photos to prove it (someone had stolen her) or so he said. We returned her when the puppies were weaned and she disapeared a few weeks later after I noticed abuse and was going to report him:(

But She gave me Love and her sister Buddie. ho I would never trade them for anything in the world. We have now added Taber our Flippin walmart find (we got him in the walmart parking lot in a city called Flippin In Arkanses.

I love Mutts. Though I always wanted another really small dog like my lil scamper.

I really don't think your heart picks the breed of dog you choose to own, just the dog itself..

Think about it:
-you can't just walk into a shelter and have the breed in your mind (well, you can...but, how can you walk past so many faces in need of your help?)
- you can't just say " oo that dog is cute! I want it!"- that doesn't cut it

I think you just happen upon a dog that catches your eye, no matter what breed, and it would be your perfect match!

Well, we had a collie when I was a little kid and I always expected we'd get another one.
After my older sister moved out and into an apartment, she got a sheltie. Then she adopted a rescue. Then she moved back home with both of them several years later...

And now I have a sheltie of my own, and can't wait to have more. ;> (Shelties are like potato chips!!)

well i have 2 heart breeds and yes i knew they both were
one isnt really a breed its a group.

1st is my pit bulls. I cant ever go with out owning one they can always make you laugh and yes sometimes cuss up a storm. but they are worth it with the love they give you and your family.

and the group is the large scent hounds. as yall know walker is part scent hound and i dont think i could live with out a hound cross or purebred hunter. They will find anything no matter where they are bearers of gifts (the count at recent is 4 squirells and 3 rabbits:rolleyes:) and they always look so pleases even when you dont.

Yes. I've always loved those 'K9 police dogs'. Every time I saw one, I couldn't help but stare... they just have such an air of confidence and admirability about them. I love 'em. I hope to always have one.

well that never really happend..while i still would love to have a doberman someday..i have fallen for the Great Dane breed....yes..an oversized, slobbering, lazy, lap sitting, natural eared, overly sensitive, "roo rooing", not intemidating by any means, great dane..lmao :D
i have never really looked back..life without a dane..well that would be boring, i couldnt imagine not having my boy, he is the light of my life, truly my best friend.

I'm still unsure as to what my heart breed is. In a way, I suppose it's the Golden Retriever. I've loved Goldens for as long as I can remember and I was absolutely thrilled when Emma came into the picture. I'm also very, very fond of Shih Tzus. There is just something about them that I love. I think their cute, but it's not so much their looks that I am attracted to, it's more so their personality. As soon as I have more control in my life and decision I think I'll probably own a Shih Tzu, a Golden, and an Aussie at all points in time.

My *entire* life I've wanted an australian shepherd.......Completely in love.....

Well at the time we figured it was time to get another dog, we were in a situation that we had to have a smaller, non-shedding dog. So, we got a hairless chinese crested (And let me tell you....I will *never* *ever* live without a chinese crested in my life. they are TERRIFFIC dogs)

Another dog that I have always wanted was....a mutt. Growing up we always had purebreds....My parents would never get a mutt, I still don't know why.

Well after Roxy, my boxer passed away, I really missed having a dog that liked to bike ride, chase balls, etc.....

So I went down to the shelter; I nearly adopted a puppy that was in there, but then I saw Jasper. Her name was Angelica in there. She had just been spayed, and so she was curled up in the back of the kennel.
I whistled to her, and she sprang up and started spinning in circles in front of the door. I opened it to go in and pet her and she was sooooooo very excited.

She was the "mutt" I had envisioned myself owning my entire life.

I love all my dogs, but i would have to say chinese cresteds and....mutts ;) are my heart dogs :)

Iv'e always loved a variety of dog breeds,but i also always loved chihuahua's.
They're soo tiny and playful,i never thought that they would be my heart dog at first due to people telling me that they are a hassel to look after.Pebbles prooved them all wrong cause she is such an Angel.She never gets aggressive towards people or other animals and she's absolutely crazy over FOOD!!! *LOL*
I also thought Akitas were my heart dog due to their sweet nature and bear like appearance.

I always thought my heart breed would be Golden Retrievers, Dachshunds, or Basset Hounds.

I have three heart breeds now - Labs, Dachshunds, and Great Danes. Guess I got one of them right!

I still love Goldens, but find that the personality of Labs and the shorter fur fits me better. Goldens' personalities are more laid back than Labs, and even though I never thought I'd want a big active dog, I love the daily activity that Labs require. I do love Goldens a lot and hope to adopt a senior one someday (I've always preffered the senior Goldens to younger ones ... something about "Old Gold" I guess :D). I pet sit a Golden frequently and he's a great dog, very similar personality to my Labs but much more quiet and reserved, which is what I've experienced with all the Goldens I've known.

I also still love Bassets and do hope to own one someday, but need to do more research on the breed before acting upon that. I hope to foster one to see how I handle their hound instincts now. When I was little we had a Basset X and a Dachshund, and their noses were always taking them everywhere. They got out frequently by digging under the fence. I do not want to deal with that again, and that is really the only thing that scares me about owning a hound again (I love nearly every scent hound breed). I'd put up with it to own a Dachshund again, so I guess I could own a hound too. My Dachshund, Buttons, was so special to me that I cannot pass up owning a Dachshund again. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind after I own another :p

I'm not so sure I have a "Heart Breed" - I have heart dogs, but I can't say that every single dog in that breed is my heart dog. :confused:
In saying that, I really can't see myself without a Cocker. Ever. But at the same time, it wouldn't be the same for me without a responsible GSD to hold the pack together.
Like others have said before, I haven't owned enough dogs that I've always dreamed of owning - so its hard to say. ;)
