A while ago I had made a post regarding how Dixie guarded her family when an armed theif jumped our fence in the middle of the night. The cops were looking for him an we had just returned from the races so we were still up at 1am, and the theif jumped the fence into our back yard. We could hardly see him, but Dixie ran to us and stood tall, mumbling at the shadow of a guy creeping so she wouldnt attack. She never left my side, or should I say right in front of me, but she stayed to fight, there was no flight! We could have been killed as the guy just shot someone in the leg atthe house he robbed and when caught had the weapon loaded and cocked, ready to go, but he never aimed at her, and she never attacked, but I felt she would have!
People argued that this incidence proved nothingas far as her temperment went. That she did not prove fight or flight, maybe it was too dark and she was really scared, if it came down to it she would have ran. Because she was bred w/out proper titles and tests, I could NEVER know it in my heart that she would pass...........................................to all of you who think she is "flighty"
read on!!!
This past weekend it rained real good turning my pool cloudy. The pool guy came on Monday to shock it, and then decided to come back yesterday unannounced. Clay had just let the dogs out to potty and called me. We generally leave the slider open, after they potty they come back in and we close it. We always check the yard for opossums and stuff before we let them out, but rarely sit and watch them while they are out.
Anyway the pool guy came, opened the gate on the privacy fence and turned and closed it. Whe he turned back, low and behold, there stood a barking, spitting, slobbering pitbull! Dixie had his back to the fence and stood her ground. Notonce did she attempt to bite, but boy did she carry on.
Then my son came running outside and before he could look up, Dixie left her post of guarding that man and "corraled" my son to stop. Mind you, he still hasnt said a word to her. She ran to Clay, never taking her eyes off of the man, and circled him and stopped right in front of him. She finally stopped barking but she had that"You touch him Ill kill you" look on her face.
She purposely stopped my son because she didnt know what this stranger was gonna do. He had pool brushes and bucket, looked intimidating to a dog!
Finally she went right in when Clay told her to, I guess she realized Clay and the man talked at a good voice tone, that everything was ok.
Needless to say, I think the guy crapped his pants!!!!
Last night the man stopped by to apologize for showing up unannounced like he did, and asked me who I had train Dixie to be protective like a cop!!!Can you believe it??She performed as if she were trained. She has never had training like this, ever! They say she listened like a human would and acted as if it were routine.
I KNOW my dog would perform again and protect us to the very end. I am so proud of her, you could only imagine!
Funny part........as this is happening, the puppies are watching from like a 7 foot distance, not making a sound, just kinda astonished. Anyway, after it was over, and Dix went inside, the pups kinda looked at her, the man, each other and were like"Hmmmm, looks ok to me!!!" and waddled to the man wagging happily for a pet and a scratch.
Sorry for the long post, just overwhelmingly proud today!
