these are the things my mom wants in a dog... about 1 walk a day, easy training, great with kids, hypoallergenic, INTELLIGENT, not hyper, medium size, $800-$1000... my mom actually wanted a cross of a WETEN and a poodle... thanks

Okay, so a girl in my class knows that I am crazy about dogs. Anyhow, she came to me because her family is looking for their first dog. They live in a medium sized house, with a smallish yard. Their mom also wants this dog as a jogging companion that wont go nuts if it only gets walked around the block one day.
Also, as little shedding as possible.
The mother works Mondays and Fridays, 9am-3pm, but other then that she is at home.

I understand the mother wanted a Designer Dog  , but I am going to talk them out of it and explain about 'the fad'. If you guys know of a breed that would fit the description, that would be great.

As far as being hypoallergenic, I don't think that that is required, just prefered. I will ask her tomorrow and double check though.

I did do a little research on Wheatons, and they seemed to fit okay.
Thoughts?

Just remember that it's wheaton TERRIER. They are certainly not calm dogs. Lovely yes, but they are a terrier and need a decent amount of exercise as well, grooming can be a bit time consuming...unless she would enjoy that.:D
I have quite a few attending both my puppy and adult dog classes and they are usually the most hyper of the group.:)

How about a standard poodle? I think they fit all the criteria perfectly.

Gempress - I was thinking the same thing

I think a standard poodle would suit them perfectly.

They are smart, hypoallergenic (no shedding), easy to train. They do need consistant exercise though and to be mentally stimulated.

I've read that no dog is really hypoallergenic, that it's usually a case-by-case thing. So some dogs will be easier to live with for some people, but although some breeds are more likely, you really have to have a trial with the particular dog and the particular person before you know for sure.

And make sure she realizes that 'no shedding' usually translates to 'professional grooming' for dogs like poodles and Wheatens.

With the other desires, I'd say an adult English Springer Spaniel or similar mix would fit. They shed and they're not particularly hypoallergenic, but they're a good size, a good energy level and they're more easy-going than terriers or poodles. They're also strikingly beautiful, which might appeal to the mom if she was interested in a 'designer' dog.

A standard poodle sounds like it would be a great fit. They are extremely smart & very easy to train. A poodle would thoroughly enjoy a jog as well as a good walk. A game of fetch inside while she is watching TV could easily fill in for some additional exercise. They do require clipping about every 8 wks but if kept in a short clip the in between time maintenance is very easy and they don't shed. When I'm ready to just veg my 2 are just as happy to snuggle up and enjoy some quiet time as well.:)

Wheatons are nuts and require a ton of upkeep on their coats, either from getting them shaved every so often to daily brushing to keep the matts out.

I think a Standard Poodle would fit the mom's criteria. Just tell her it's a Poodle-doodle.

I'd personally stay away from the Terrier groups. How about visiting the HS just to see what's available ?? What you see is what you get. Not true with a sweet little pup . Or you could check out a pure breed rescue.
