I recently adopted an adult dog and want to train him. Can anyone give me advice on how to start at home? I'm not really into classes.
Well classes are your best bet if you don't have experience with dogs and even if you do they help your dog socialize!

What exactly do you want to train him to do?

I just want him to learn some basic manners, like sit, stay, come. He seems to be good with other dogs, so I just want to train him.

I highly recommend this book:

You don't have to order it from dogwise.com, Amazon has it too, it's just a link I had handy. :) And if you order it, you might also want to get this one (http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB745) to go with it, it's truly excellent.

I highly recommend The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell for an overall understanding of training, and dog behavior. She is a great writer and the book is good to read on its own. I think it's available on Amazon. Her website is www.dogsbestfriend.com
As one who is a involved with a no kill shelter and loves to see shelter adoption promoted, there is a great basic manners DVD called Behave Yourself Dog Training Video Extravaganza. It shows you how to train the basics without being preachy or boring. My favorite thing is that all dogs in it were adopted from shelters, and the trainer is from the show Animal Precinct.
I got it on Amazon. Their website is www.behave-yourself.com
Hope this info helps.

There's also a lot of good info on the web, just do a search for "dog training" and you can find training info on the basic commands for free...

I have a comprehensive training e-book on my website, www.puppytrainingadvice.com, 40 pages in all. It is designed for puppies but the same training methods apply to dogs of all ages. A DOG IS NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN NEW TRICKS.
