Puppy keeps eating own poop

Hello:

We are running out of ideas. We have a Shih Ztu puppy who just keeps eating it's own poop as soon as she goes. She is 3 months old. We've tried the product
"For-Bid" from the Vet for over a week now and she continues to eat it.

The only way we of course can stop it is to be right there when she's done and cover it quickly before she gets to it.

We have even tried the "Adolf's Meat seasoning" without any success.

Any ideas on what any one out there has been successful with or any type of disapline they tried that has worked.

Any adivse would be greatly appreciated.

Many puppies go through this stage. Over the years I tried many of the additives they sell and never had any success with them. The only thing you can do is be vigilant and pick it up before she gets it. The good news is that they generally grow out of it.:)

She should grow out of it. I've read that it means that their poop still has nutrients and minerals in it. What kind of food are you feeding them? Rich foods will end in rich poops! I've heard of shephards doing this especially and the owners had to give them a "less high quality" food, less high quality=less minerals/vitamins in poop.

Although it is a puppy so I would personally just pick it up as soon as she poops and try my best to deter her.

Like the above posts have said, it is a fairly typical puppy behavior, and most often doesn't have much to do with anything tangible if a puppy is fed well and fed enough.:eek: If your pup is really quick, make sure bathroom breaks are on leash so that you can praise for the poop and then redirect her attention. Picking up after EVERY single poop will stop this behavior from becoming habitual. If you're consistant, they'll grow out of it.

I have 5 dogs, one on heart medication. She's a little chocolate Chihuahua...we call her our little "FUDGE FACTORY". For some reason her meds make her poops more interesting to one of our other dogs. I pick up after every poop, its a good habit to get into anyway, and stops the other dog from going for an after dinner "snack"..blah..gag!
The additives, IMO are more to line the pockets of the products creators...useless really.

i heard that some pups are designated "cleaners" in their litter and that's what they did when they were still with mom so they continue to do it to keep their areas clean even though they aren't with the litter any longer. i know the mother cleans up after them as well....but i guess even she'd get tired of it after awhile? :) just what i heard....

I think in some cases it can be they are missing something in their diet but mostly it's just something some dogs do. Best thing is to clean up quickly.

Ralph will try and get there to eat it..........but i am always there picking it up before he has chance to turn around to it :D

You have to watch the pup closely and clean up the poop right away. Forget about using gimmicks and products to do your job for you.

Stool eating, along with the mom consuming the waste of puppies, evolved as a survival mechanism among wild canids.

This kept the den area clean and the scent level lower.

Stool eating, as revolting as it is to us, is a normal puppy behavior.

Posters who say that most of the time puppies grow out of it are correct. :D

The best course of action is to verbally discourage her from showing interest in her excrement, and to pick it up and dispose of it immediately.
