Strange Training Methods

The other day I overheard these people talking. The woman casually mentioned to the man she was talking to that she was having a little trouble with her dog chewing shoes. The man then told this woman that the way to teach her dog not to chew shoes was to place the shoe against the dog's head, wrap duct tape around it, and leave it there for a week, and the dog would never touch a shoe again.

I don't know about you, but this method seems a little odd to me :confused: . First of all, I have never read in ANY training books about taping things to a dog. Second, doesn't this seem like it would be a form of psychological torture? I mean, the dog would probably scratch and claw at the tape trying to get it off his head. He could probably cause himself injury. Thirdly, I don't think I could look at a dog for a week with a shoe on his head and not be utterly ashamed of myself for doing such a thing.

The next time that guy tries taping a shoe to a dog's head, I hope the dog bites him in the wrist! :mad:
If he tapes shoes to dogs, one can only wonder what other wonderful methods he uses for training. :(

Some peoples ideas on dogs and training seem so random. He was probably drunk when he came up with that idea.

It sounds like an updated version of how some people used to discourage dogs from killing whatever they didn't want killed (chickens in farm dogs, 'vermin' in bird dogs, etc.) They used to tie the corpse around the dog's neck and let it live with the stink and nastiness for a week. On the same theory of making your experimenting-with-cigarettes child smoke a pack of cigars till he vomits, I guess - pure overload leaving a grossout aversion to the stuff.

Now, I only ever read about either of the above. I certainly never did either, and don't know anyone who did.

Just goes to show how much people anthropomorphize - I don't know a single dog that would object to reeking of rotten bird. It'd be more like torture for the human.

I have heard of people using a similar method on labs or hunting dogs who chew up birds. They tie the bird to them and leave the dead carcus there.:confused:
I would never do that!
Also have heard of poeple using sling shots and marbles for field training...I was like WHAT?!!!! You touch my dog with a marble you wont ever be able to find that marble again! I ll shove it so far up you *bleep* you wont be able to pee for a year!

Brilliant. I've heard of similar methods where the forbidden object is placed in the dogs mouth and the mouth is taped to hold the object in place.

Or to stop a dog from digging, the owner must fill the hole with water and then hold the dogs head under the water until the dog nearly passes out.

Where to people come up with this crap??
