Hi,

Not only am I new to this site, but I have never posted on any site before, so forgive any stupidity! I am an owner 4 Boston Terriers. I hate to start out right away with a concern, but I have never had a sick dog before. The dogs we have had in the past have passed from old age, never from a sickness. My oldest (but still only 8) Boston, Buddy, we rescued from an animal shelter about 4 years ago. He almost died then because he got an infection at the needle sites for his anesthesia for neutering him. Since then, he has been the best friend and companion to my family. 3 weeks ago, I noticed his gums were white, I mean white! I took him to the vet's office, assuming he had a case of worms that had caused him to be anemic, but instead the doc says he has autoimmune hemolytic anemia. She also says it could be a form of cancer. What's strange is there were no symptoms other than the white gums. His PCV was 20, with normal being 30. She started him on prednisone 20 mg twice a day, which has had no effect whatsoever. The purpose of this, as I understand it, was to encourage production of red blood cells, but after 3 weeks, his count is still at 20. In the past two weeks, he has become a bit clumsy and lethargic. His heart rate is elevated and his breathing seems more labored than usual. She also suggested giving him B complex vitamins, bottled water, and liver, raw or cooked, which we have done. Today, his stool was green and he has developed an infection in his eyes. The vet is out of the office today, so I can't get anything for his eyes until tomorrow. I would really like some advise from anyone who has dealt with this type problem before. I don't want him to suffer. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but she says he could go into crisis fairly quickly or have a blood clot. Any ideas on how to help him and what to expect with this illness? Thanks and sorry to jump in with very little introduction!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'm so sorry to hear about Buddy's illness! I'm afraid I can't offer much in the way of advice besides hope your vet gets back into the office soon and in the meantime, keep him calm.

Hi Boston! Welcome to Chaz!!

Do you brush his teeth? White gums could be a gum diease if his teeth aren't brushed.

As for his eyes, take a warm, damp washcloth and gently rub the gunk out of his eyes if you can't get to the vet today. This will give him a little relief until you can get him to the vet for proper meds.

I hope I have helped you, and I hope your little guy gets better!

Thanks Zoom and Angel Chicken.

The doc says his teeth look amazingly good for him to be 8 years old. I don't brush his teeth, but I will check out his gums to see if that could be an issue. I will use the warm washcloth though, that would probably help him. I have some antibiotic ointment from another eye infection, but I think he almost needs an oral antibiotic. Hopefully, we will get good results from the prednisone, but I am a medical transcriptionist and type for a Rheumatology department. They use prednisone a lot and I hear a lot of terrible side effects to it. Thanks again. I didn't realize just telling someone about it and getting a response would be so helpful mentally.

If it looks like a white film, then it could be plaque (spelling?). You can buy him many things to help out with that. Bones, dog toothbrush and toothpaste, treats, all kinds of stuff.

I find that dentabones work great, and they are a meaty flavor, so dogs LOVE them!

I have done the washcloth thing with Kona, and it works well when you can't get to the vet right away. Gives them a little bit of relief too!

Glad to help you in anyway, if you need anything else, just give out a hollar!

Thanks for everyone's concern. My sweet Buddy died Friday evening at 5:30. I am heartbroken! I feel very responsible because I knew in my heart he shouldn't be on the prednisone, but I felt like the doctor should know best.

Hey Boston,

I just read your posts. I'm so sorry. I understand how you fell about thinking the vet should know what they are doing. My miniature pincher (?) was diagnosed with the same thing after being bitten by a copperhead snake. He was put on an antibioatic and prednisone, and shortly after began to get very weak and urinate blood. It turns out that he was allergic to the antibiotic.
Ever since then he has been overweight , but he survived the incident.
Now we find he may have cushings disease, and I'm hoping the vet can get this right.

Again, very sorry for your loss. We had to put our Charpei, Little Bob, down this past Monday due to cancer. Its devastating!

Hi Boston, Welcome to the site...

I am very sorry to hear about Buddy... I lost my dog a few months ago in an extremly short time and now my cat has cancer as well... so I understand your pain.

You had very little time, so you can not blame yourself for Buddy's passing.
However, if you feel the vet did not do right by your dog, or listen to your concerns, give you options, etc. Now might be the time to look for a new one for your other dogs. There is nothing more important then a good vet who will listen to your concerns.

Good Luck.
