Can a Male be put to stud?
Reason i ask is b/c i want to let Bailey sow his wild oats just once before having him "done", but at the same time i want to get him "done" before Ralph gets to the age where they start to fight for Dominance.
After he is 2 years old with all health clearances done and at least one title under his collar.
Letting your dog stand stud, even once, not only brings another litter into an already over"pup"ulated world, but increases unwanted behaviors. Read this wonderful post: http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showpost.php?p=340424&postcount=11
I highly recommend that you get your boys fixed at 6 months, or in Bailey's case (as it sounds like he is over 6mo.) as soon as you can.

Did you buy him with the intention to breed him ? Also what can he offer to the breed im guessing he is a SBT which he would need to be L2 Hga i think it is tested and im sure they are hip scored aswel. If you just want to breed him because you think he should have a litter before he is neutered i would leave it and just get him neutered, breeding a dog can make them more dominant and scent more than before because they have had a taste of it and that then doesnt always go away with neutering.
Please have a look on www.staffycross.org
No need to futher add to the rescue problem with precious Bull Breeds :)

Thanks everyone, i am looking into everything you have said.
Whizz, why would i look at a site for Staffycross?
I wasn't thinking of Mating him with anything other than a Purebred Staffy Bitch!
Staffords are the number one dog in rescue's across the UK...I wasnt incinuating that you were going to breed him with anything other than a Stafford but I personally think there's already enough Stafford's in the world without breeding more and adding to the problems in rescue's across the UK. Not saying that you would..But I think theres already more than enough Stafford's to go around crying out for homes, not including dogs that are waiting in rescue.

No i didn't have the intention to Breed him........I just thought that it seems a shame to waste such a good dog!
After having read everything you all have to say i will consider it very deeply before making a decision.
Thanks :)

Just out of interest what is it your classing as a 'good' dog, has he been shown and to the breed standard, is he a good working dog of any kind? There are lots of nice tempremented staffs out there. Also is he KC registered im guessing he is ?
I have a few good dogs it dont make them quality breeding material :)
You have to look past the point of them being 'a good dog' and look well into their linage/background/breeding.

Males do best (with respect to temperment issues) when neutered prior to 10 months of age. Testosterone is at it's height for your breed at about that time. I agree with Zoom....if it's just so he can "git em some", it's not worth the consequences:D

Giving him a "taste" and then taking it away is such a tease why bother at all. I would just fix him and forget it ;) Like others said there are enough Staffy's and pitbulls in shelters not just in the UK but all over the place.

Bailey+Ralph,
I really have a good feeling about you and your posts.
I think you are being totally honest in asking such a question.....which I cannot fault you for being inquisitive.
But the true reality is getting Bailey fixed will probably avoid some dominance issues and will help keep your two getting along much better. That really is the most important thing. And also getting Ralph altered when the time comes.
Think about it this way......there are sooooooooooo many dogs that have great qualities yet have been dealt a hand with a bad owner. So now they are in the shelters just waiting for a good home or waiting to die. Instead of finding homes for future pups...why not broadcast the ones in need of a home....you might save alot of lives.
I have a feeling you will do the right thing. :)
Best Wishes,
Julie.

Think of it this way.
If you have NEVER HAD CHOCOLATE, you cannot "miss" it, because you don't know what it is.
NEUTERING a male dog removes sexual thoughts and frustrations from his life.
It is the kindest thing to do for a male dog that is not going to be used on a regular basis.
Breeding him once beforehand, IMO, is much worse for the dog than never having bred him.

If you really feel he is a great dog with breed able possibilities , I would freeze and store sperm before neutering. Then when you have checks and titles you can always fall back on his sperm bank if need be.

The chances of reproducing your dog is almost NIL. Each dog or pup is a individual. Makes no sense to breed for such a reason. The best chance to get a pup like yours is to go to the original breeder IMO.
He will always be a good boy, bred or neutered. JMHO

If you want to test him, show him, and work him, go right ahead! =)
My Flyball trainer has a gorgeous staffy girl. She is from a BYB who bred their friendly pet dogs, and didn't see any point in testing. Unfortunately, her baby is going through painful hip surgery this weekend... in August, they will operate on her other hip. She's just over 1 year old, and she can no longer compete in the sport that she loves (she also did wonderful in pulling, and can't ever do that again) because of a BYB probably just wanting "1 litter". I thought alot about this last night.
I just want to Thank you Julie for what you said and also everyone else for your comments and suggestions.
As i said Breeding Bailey was only a thought!
I think that i will have him booked in for his alteration :)
You know i just love him so much and would have loved for him to father one litter, but as you all said there are too many unwanted dogs in the world and i would hate for one of all of his pups to end up in rescue centers.
Thank you all so much for helping me to make this decision :)

Anyhow as i said, thanks :)

We're really glad to hear it Bailey! It's obvious that you're a responsible dog owner, and you really do care about your dogs
You can always go to the shelter and get a puppy, and raise him/her with your current dogs if you really want a pup :D

Ah!
I wouldn't have kept one of his litter, just thought that mating him would be nice for him. :)

It probably would have been nice for him! ROFLMAO! :D
I'm glad that you have thought about it and decided against breeding!! :) Just enjoy your pup for what he is, a great companion and best friend!! And he will love you all the more!! Also he will not be agitated all the time when he smells a female on heat! Gus was TERRIBLE before he was neutered, really nervy, alway pacing, never settled. And now he is a totally different dog, he is sooooooo much happier.
And all you guys have shown real respect on this thread that I think needs to be applauded *claps* So often these sorts of threads turn into a mud slinging match! It has been both refreshing and a pleasure to read!

Well you know, not everyone agrees on everything.
As adults we should be able to discuss and respect each others decisions.
But also at the same time offer our advice and opinions. :)

Infact, I believe that most of the younger members are really good about being polite and what-not.
