I'm actually not looking to breed my dog. I have a chihuahua and the vet told me she's too small to have babies safely and I don't want to put her through the trouble of a cesarean. We wanted to get her fixed but she's in heat now so I was actually wondering how long that lasts.
She's been dripping a sort of watery blood and has been swollen about a week now and I don't remember how long our last chihuahua was in heat. We had another girl briefly about 6 years ago that I had to give to my brother when I moved to college. I remember when she was in heat she bled very definately but not for that long a time. Can anyone clear some of this up for me? Is this normal for her?

my Lab was recently in heat. she bled on and off for almost 2 weeks and was swollen (noticably) for about 2 weeks as well. she's just now coming off her cycle and starting to get to where she doesn't want the males sniffing at her and trying to mount her. i'd say it's about a month long process of coming into heat, accepting and then going out of heat.

Average heat cycle last about 3 weeks but can vary greatly, some as short as 7-10 days. First week usually swelling, bleeding, second week ready to accept male....it really can vary quite a bit. Both of my Chi's went into heat while the Vet waited for their last baby teeth to fall. They both lasted almost 3 weeks...poor little babies:(

What she said ^
Also some dogs will be ready sooner than others. Meaning they will accept a male earlier than normal. Or The opposite.
21-27 days is the norm.
Keep her away from males the whole time!

remember clear, red, clear.
My Dixie lasted a whole month each heat. It was horrible. She is getting fixed soon. The vets are booked up forever!

I never took any chances and counted on a 4 week heat. I would say it would be safe to have her spade 4 months from now. I agree WATCH her !

Thanks for the replies! And don't worry, I don't leave her anywhere by herself. ^^
