I wanted to share with you a majic ear wash that I use and it works as good as any antibiotic I have used for my dogs ears.

Ingredients can be found at any local drug store or even Walmart.
16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol (or witch hazel)
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution

Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (make sure you shake before every application).

Treatment: Fill ear with solution & massage gently for 30 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. Be careful, the Gentian Violet could stain. I use a eye dropper to fill the ear.

Treatment:
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks
1 time per month thereafter

If you are concerned about the alcohol burning the inside of the ear (it could if the dog has been scratching its ear), then you can substitute the alcohol with witch hazel.

Alcoholl will burn like crazy if your dog has an infection, even a small one

That does sound like an interesting mixture.

Jenn, what do you use to clean your Beagle's ears?

If you read it, it says if you worry about it stinging or burning to switch the alcohol for witch hazel.
I know many many of people who use the "purple potion". trainers, breeders, and pet owners. I would not post a solution that would be harmful to your dog!
All my dogs once a week get thier ears cleaned with this. It works great! Keeps them from developing any ear infections. Before I started using it my dogs got infections all the time. Since I train for hunt tests they are constantly in the water which causes alot of thier infections.

I use some yellow stuff I got from the vet.

It's no alcoholl based but it's a perscription. Since Emma is so prone to infections because of her alergies.

That is the exact same recipe we used at another vet I used to work at. I was never crazy about them putting roach killer in the ear cleaner, but it always "ate" the infection right up.

what's the roach killer?

The roach killer is boric acid. That's what is in roach poisoning.
