My nearly 5 month old Belgian Shepherd started foaming around the mouth today. To me it looks like excess saliva and its happening only when I take him outside. The weather is kinda hot today so I am guessing that might be the reason. But I want to be safe and thought I would check here for your opinions.
Is foaming around the mouth normal in dogs? I know it could mean rabbies but my dog seems normal today other then the foaming. A few minutes ago when I came back home from a short walk outside I noticed some blood with his foam but I am assuming thats from the raw meat I fed him just before the walk. He has had his rabbies shots.
thanks

It could mean anything, but usually thirst, fatigue, a dry mouth, illness, etc. In my experience, Belgians start to pant and foam when thirsty. It would not be rabies anyways, foaming doesn't happen until the late stage of rabies before the dog dies -- if it were, you would have known your dog has rabies by now lol. :)
after Hammie has been running, he has this horrible foam around his mouth. (I hate being 'slimed'...and he usually manages to rub on my shirt) for him, it is just cause he is thirsty. foaming could mean your pup has an upset stomach. if he seems fine...probably the heat. hope he is ok, keep us posted. :)

hmmm upset stomach, thats interesting, he took a dump earlier and it was very soft like diarrhea so it could be because of that. interesting.. thanks :)

Did he get ahold of a frog? My dog's love to go "frogging" around our farm pond and every now and then they will actually almost catch one and there is something in the skin that is harmless, but will make them foam around the mouth and look like they have a mouth full of dishwashing liquid for about 15-20 minutes. I realize this is a long shot, but the only thing I could think of that hasn't been mentioned...I also doubt the rabies idea...I think they show more symptoms of rabies before they start foaming at the mouth.

you would have noticed an extreem change in behaviour, increased agression disorientation ect WELL before any kind of foaming at the mouth in a rabies case...
by the foaming point as was said youd already know he had rabies...
also if hes completly rabies vacinated its very unlikely hed even get rabies so i wouldnt worry bou that one.
sounds like hed gotten himself a little warm and needed a drink...especially since you said it seems to happen when he goes out and its hot out...
make sure he has plenty of acess to fresh water at all times (especially since hes got such a big fluffy coat lol)
ive found some ice in the water or on a slippery floor is also a fun game and a good way to cool down!

well last night he didnt foam again but today morning he puked what looked like eggs. dont know if the raw eggs we fed him 2 days ago had something to do with it. other then that he seems normal, maybe a bit less hyper then usual but really wanting a lot of attention and rubbing. i am at work now but my mum will be passing by to take the dog over to her place. will see how things go..

I think the best thing to do is to take him to the vet to have it checked out. Like the others have said, foaming can occur for a variety of reasons. Better safe than sorry..... the vet is the way to go!~

Was he excited for some reason, like was he riled up?
Dogs when excited do foam at the mouth.
Chico foams when he is upset and excited. Sometimes he barks and when he feels a threat he gets excited and starts foaming.
I would still take him to the vet to check on that, because something minor can turn into something major. I am almost positive its not rabies but there can be something wrong.
