but I'm a bit frustrated at this point. Hammie has a spot on his direct underbelly that will be bald...about the size of an egg. then...hair grows back normal. THEN...hair loss on the same spot again. no rashes...no scratching...nothing unusual looking. no hair loss anywhere else...just this little patch on his belly. could it be from rubbing?? laying??? I am at such a loss. the hair is now growing back as per usual...but this has happened a few times.  it's just..........strange to say the least.

boy, nedim...I sure wouldn't think so. I've seen hot spots, and this just doesn't look like one. it is so 'passive'.....no redness, no irritation...nothing unusual at all. it just looks like little baby skin..then hair grows back...then gone again. it never grows larger than this one spot. OH how I HATE the thought of a vet visit for something that seems so 'casual'. IF he were annoyed by it in any way, that would be different. I'm at such a loss. THANK YOU...it is something to consider! :) :)

(and no....when I get Peanut again, I'm not giving her back) hahaha

Debi, Purdue always had a spot like that . . . about two inches in front of, well, you know ;) The skin always looked healthy, it never seemed to itch, but every now and then I'd look at it and it would be bare in a patch that would vary in size between a quarter and a half dollar. Then the hair would grow back. It never bothered him, so I never worried about it.

He lived to be 16 years old, so it must've been okay ;)

Buster, my mom's Lab, had a bald spot just about in the same spot as Renee's Purdue. It never gave him any trouble, and occasionally the hair would grow back in and stay there for a while. I think it's normal....

Is it possible that that is where he's bearing his weight when he lays down? Does it improve if he's always on a soft bed instead of outside or the hard floor?

Possibly alopecia? Alopecia is usually an auto-immune disease. It can pop up at any time but most often when the host is under stress or it's immune system is somehow compromised (like when the dog is being subjected to chemicals, such as parasite preventatives, or being fed a poor quality food). It can pop up anywhere on the body and sometimes in only one spot. I, myself, have alopecia, and it usually only affects my eyelashes. They will start to fall out. Sometimes it thins my hair as well. It happens when I am under stress or haven't been eating well.

he hasn't been stressed, and he eats Innova with chicken wings. I thought of maybe it being from a hard surface, but he is usually snoring on the bed. an allergy maybe? today there is downy hair growth, but it still looks so odd with the longer hair on the rest of his belly. guess if it doesn't grow back normal this time, I'll have him checked at the vet. unless it's something easy, I don't see the vet being much help, but they can check a scraping of the skin. funny how it never gets larger....or is ever anywhere else. Addie has a little bald spot on her belly, and when I asked the vet about it he said it is her bellybutton! I've never thought of a dog having one....LOL
