How often should you take you dog in for a check up after they have had all their shots? and when exactly do most reach their adult weight? The reason I am asking about the weight is because I know that frontline and heartworm medicine are based upon weight...

I take my dog in once a year, well I think I will, so far she has been at least every 6 months after shots, then spayed, then booster shots, etc.

My dog was at her adult weight of 26 pounds by the time she was a year, but she is a beagle, I dont know if it changes for bigger breeds or anything.

Thanks, maybe somebody will know about larger dogs... Chloe was 26.8 pounds at 4 months :D... So no doubt she is 30 or more now...

for makenzie's first few years he went every 6 months. Now he only goes about once a year. He needs to go again so I can get his shots updated (I still can't believe they don't have a record of him from last year... )

Well with Chico he went the first day I got him, three weeks after that and then 6 months later. He'll go back every 6 months because I am taking no chances with him.

Chico weighs 85 lbs but still hasn't reached his mature weight. He probably won't get taller (29 inches) but he will get thicker and more muscular. Most big dogs don't reach maturity until they are 2 years old and giant breeds can be as long as 4 years.

So is it recommended that they go every 6 months for the first few years? I thought routine check-ups were yearly....

after all shots are up to date...I wouldn't go more than yearly. there is simply no reason to, unless your pup is ill. this is just my opinion...but a healthy dog doesn't need to be seen more than annually...no matter what a vet says. (they love that fee that goes with anything more)

I take Mojo yearly, then will take him in whenever i start to worry about how he's acting (if he's ever listless, or won't eat for a few days for example). I know from having much larger dogs (a german shepherd mix to be exact) it takes them about a year to grow up, and then another year to two years to fill out with muscle. So if Chloe is a shepherd mix don't expect her to reach full maturity (meaning a stable weight) until she is 2 or 3. :)
