Hi Everyone.. Im new here and looking forward to getting to know yall.

Bailey hurt her shoulder this morning playing with Minnie and has been limping quite a bit since then. Shes only 3 months so is usually very active during the day, but today has slept the entire day, Im sure because shes hurt. She jumped off the bed and cried, and jumped off the sofa and cried.. so I have not let her get up on anything since then. While sleeping on the floor she keeps crying when she changes positions or stretches. This has been all day so I finally gave her a baby aspirin. I didnt bring her straight to the vet because sometimes these things just go away fairly quickly. I will bring her tomorrow if nothing is better, but any suggestions in the meantime?? Are the aspirin okay? Shes 16 pounds and the pills are 81mg, I only gave her one. I know coated would be better but I dont have any. Thanks.

NO NO NO

As a EMT I would NEVER give asprin to my dog. They are blood thiners. If a person overdosed on them they basicly bleed to death internaly with no cuts. If your dog tore something or is bleeding you are going to make it worse. Call the vet and tell them what you did.

I know you didnt do it on purpose.

You should never give human meds to a dog unles SECIFICLY told to by a vet. Did you know Tylonol is VERY fatal to dogs in small quantities??

Hey, I wouldn't worry about the aspirin but I'd check with your vet about it. An 81mg aspirin isn't going to harm her as far as bleeding goes and the enteric coating doesn't help (in people or animals). Just keep the dose below 25mg/kg (so I don't think the 81mg would even help with pain, depending on her size) and don't give it more than three times a day. The main concern with aspirin is ulceration of the stomach/intestinal lining over time (5-6 weeks), so make sure that its only short term. Just keep an eye on her as far as panting goes, and activity levels. Still ask your vet about it though too. (Merck Vet Manual).

And sorry, I don't want to discredit an EMT but I'm a pharmacist here and have worked with these drugs for a while, although not in animals, so make sure you ask your vet.

Not taken that way, dont worry.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just dont think it is safe to give a dog or any animal human meds unless the vet gives the OK first.

As you know asprine can cause alot of damage if missused and a dog's body reacts VERY differently to things that a humans.

Jenn, thanks. I think everyone should check with their vet too, but I just didn't want her to worry about giving a small aspirin at the moment. The Merck Vet Manual is a pretty good reference so I think that her dog will be okay, but vets are still the number one reference.

Thanks everyone... sorry I couldnt get back earlier, my husband was playing his game...

I did give her one aspirin, thats all... but I read many many web pages and vet questions about it before hand. It was too late to call the vet. She has been trying to be very active and play but I can tell its bothering her. She spent about an hour with her busy dog ball, now shes in bed. I will take her in to the vet tomorrow if she is still limping.

Would you all agree that if she not limping I dont need to take her? Or if its getting better? Of course I want to take her if need be... but my Kayla did this a few times and it was a waste - they just told me what I already knew and said have her rest. Although Kayla was the queen of tolerating any kind of pain or injury, and never made a peep of crying - just limping... so its hard to tell.

What game does your husband play? Just currious. :D

Stoli had a problem like this when she was 3-4 months....We were playing and she lept for a tennis ball and didn't have her feet under her when she came down and BAM landed right on her butt. She limped and generaly looked pathetic for 6-8 hours then she started to come around...When we went to the vet she checked her out and in words I could understand said that she may have bruised a bone....like a super charly-horse and that she would be fine. She didn't cry though....

I personally don't like any leaping games with pups until almost a year old. Those soft bones and joints don't need the stress.

I know it....I feel really bad about it and I was scolded by the vet too....

She was just running around like crazy and slid on the floor and slammed into to wall... so somehow that hurt it.

Kayla had this happen a few times because she was a silly girl, and it always went away just fine (but no crying) so thats why I was worried, although I had a feeling it was nothing serious.

Anyway I took her to the vet today who said she fine and to just wait.... wish I woldnt have gone really, but I guess its better to know for sure.

My husband plays World of Warcraft with his brothers and nephews, they all have it., blah blah blah.... personaly , I HATE when he plays that game. But sometimes its for 10 hours a day - then hes in trouble.
