Allergic Reaction

Hi everyone:

I've had my puppy for less than 4 days and just had to take an emergency trip to the animal hospital. I'm not sure what she ate, although I suspect a wayward potato chip... and within 1/2 hour her face had swollen up. I called the vet and met her down there and by that time her mouth had swollen and her genitals too... not sure why. We figured it was an allergic reaction and the doc gave her some dexamethasone and then I got her some benadryl. She's tired now but the swelling is almost gone.

Not really an interesting story but she's my first dog and it scared me quite a bit. I'm gonna have to be a lot more careful about what she eats, expensive trip and hard on my nerves, and hers too I bet.

I can't see a potato chip causing that kind of allergic reaction...but it is possible. What kind of plants do you have around your house?

Well she was in my room with me for a few hours with no problem whatsoever. The only thing she ate was that chip outside her normal food/treats and after she ate that she began to swell up within about 1/2 hour. I have some plants in my house but she hasn't touched them since she's been here. It was quite a rapid reaction too, so had she touched something else while I hadn't been watching... it would have shown up earlier.

Very interesting that a potato chip caused such a reaction. Glad to hear your pup is doing fine.

Could it have been a spider bite ??

Hmm... its still pretty cold here and not a lot of bugs out. I haven't seen any spiders in my house before, either. I guess it really could have been anything that caused it, but that fateful chip is the only thing that sticks out in my mind.
