knife thug screamed as he chased dog and stabbed it 16 times
By Richard Smith
DRUNKEN Richard Kilcommons stabbed his pet labrador to death after chasing it, crying out: "Let's see how quick Bessy is!"

In a sickening attack Kilcommons, 41, plunged a 7in kitchen knife 16 times into the devoted animal's back and sides as she yelped in agony.

Four of the thrusts pierced the dog's lungs causing massive internal bleeding from which she died.

The boss, who claimed he loved eight-year-old Bessy, later said he was so drunk he could not remember his cruel frenzy.

Yesterday he was starting a 23-week jail term.

Police said: "The jail sentence shows just how traumatic and disturbing this case was. This was a despicable attack on a defenceless animal."

The RSPCA said: "This was a shocking attack of wanton cruelty. We welcome any action that deters such behaviour."

Kilcommons went berserk after turning up apparently drunk at his local pub, the Running Horse, in his home village of Littleton, Hants. His girlfriend, who worked at the bar, took him back to his house to sober up.

They found the property looking as if it had been burgled, with broken glass and drawers pulled out. Bizarrely, Kilcommons said they should turn off the lights to see if the police turned up.

Scared by his behaviour, the girl offered to take chocolate labrador Bessy out for a walk while Kilcommons calmed down.

Prosecutor James Burnham told Andover court: "At that stage the defendant took a large blade from a block of knives, and said 'Let's see how quick Bessy is!'

"He then walked towards the dog, who was lying on her side, and stabbed her in the back.

"The dog yelped and tried to run off. But he followed, repeatedly stabbing her." Vet Dr Morris Alan said the wounds were inflicted by a knife at least 15cm long in a "frenzied" attack.

Defending Kilcommons, Carolyn Lucocq said: "He was devoted to Bessy and had had her since she was seven weeks old. There was no more loved dog.

"This was an isolated incident that happened when he was so intoxicated he couldn't even remember what he'd done. To this day he still doesn't know what happened. He's distressed by what he did."

The lawyer said Kilcommons ran into £30,000 debt after his business selling second-hand printing machines failed to make a profit in two years.

Although his parents had paid off much of the debt, his real problems stemmed from alcohol abuse. He was now seeking treatment.

Kilcommons, who was led handcuffed from court, admitted animal cruelty. He was also banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

The case follows a spate of shocking acts of animal cruelty. Earlier this week drug-fuelled thug Peter Dibden, of Billingham, Teesside, was fined £900 for stabbing his giant bull mastiff to death with a two-metre samurai sword.

Damien French, who dropped a live rabbit into an alligator's mouth at a zoo in Colwyn Bay, faces jail. In January Adam Richards, 18, of Heamoor, Cornwall, was jailed for six months for stabbing and kicking to death a pregnant hedgehog.

23 weeks is far too short a time to serve for such cruelty! I would hang photos of his poor dog and make him look at them every day for the rest of his life! (And if I'd been the girlfriend, I'd have hit him upside the head with the first heavy object I could lay my hands on before he killed the poor dog.)

pardon me if i read incorrectly, but I couldn't bring myself to read the article, just skimmed it, but he's only getting a 23 week jail term sentence? That is incredible...oh my.

Why and how could anyone possibly THINK of doing something like that...after the events of Zander getting into the accident last night I seriously couldn't imagine someone doing that. To a beautiful healthy dog inflicting death upon it, where I almost lost my dog last night to a stupid and horrible accident.

What the hell is wrong with people?! That guy should be stabbed 16 times and see how he likes it. Stupid piece of dog poo. I hope he gets the crap kicked out of him in jail for what he did. **** that makes me so angry.

No excuse for what the owner did to his beloved pet. He should be in jail for a long time, his sentence is to short IMO.

That is horrible...it made my stomach sink reading it. I started to read it to my bf and he made me stop. We both hate any type of animal abuse.....and that goes way over the abuse line. He should spend a lot longer in jail then what he is, and ten years not owning a pet is ridiculous. He should be banned for life, and not able to even be around animals..no dog parks or anything. And whoever said he should have to look at pictures of his dog is right. The judge could've got creative and put pictures in his cell of his dog....I hope those demons that made him do that torment him for the rest of his pathetic life.

23 weeks??? Are you kidding me?? He abused and killed an innocent life, and his excuse "I was drunk". Take that excuse and shove it up your a**, cause I could care less. I don't care if he was drunk or mentally insane, killing an animal just for being drunk cannot be justified. It amazing how if you kill someone you get life, but for a "worthless" dog you only get 23 weeks. Show the dog some respect. I hate how people don't see dogs worthy of life, how their lives are not important. I'm glad he did get sentenced but what was the point. 23 weeks is nothing, for taking away an innocent life.

23 week jail term??? Sorry, but when it comes to animal cruelty, I believe in "an eye for an eye". Throwing him in jail for a few weeks is letting him off way to easy.

I think 23 years would be more fitting. When will authorities realize that someone capable of doing that to his dog could and would do that to a strange human.

But what did the girlfren do? SHe just stood there and watch him stab the dog to death? I would have grabbed a chair and hit him on the head at the 1st instance or at least open the door and run out with the dog.
How could she stand there and watch him stab the poor dog 16 times x(

what disturbs me so much is he raised the dog from a young puppy and then killed it just like that!!

as for the girlfriend i kind of feel bad for her. i mean if you read it, it states that she became disturbed by the behavior and asked if she could take the dog out for a walk, thus removing herself and the dog from his house. it doesn't say she didn't scream or try to stop him. i know i might have grabbed whatever i could to try to save the dog. but against a full grown man, who was obviously missing a few screws, with a knife i don't think i could have done to much except get myself hurt/killed as well.

i think it says alot when the girlfriend tried to get the dog out of there as well instead of just leaving by herself

i actually saw a case VERY similar to this on animal cops: detroit. The gf also didnt do anything. She was freaking out of course, oh, and it was HER dog, not his...

but when you are around a crazed guy, with a knife...i really dont know if there is much you can do :(

this is so f*ing disgusting. I am a believe that what you do drunk is representative of things you WANT to do sober, but are just too chicken, ya know?

If this guy truly did love his dog, then he has SERIOUS mental issues. I dont see how they arent sending him straight to an insane asylum after his INCREDIBLY short sentence....

god the poor poor dog :(

That is such a terrible tragedy. I feel sorry for his GF for reasons others have already stated. 23 weeks is way too short. It's creepy to think about, but what if he had turned his knife on another human being? What if he had stabbed his GF in a drunken frenzy also? In my opinion the judge should have also required a substance abuse treatment program or something, so maybe he can get his act together. Hopefully this incident made him realize how terrible his drinking is and that it needs to stop before other innocents become victims.

He should get a life sentence, just like he would if he murdered a human. That is exactly what he is guilty of, murder. I am so sick of people who get off with a slap on the wrist for animal cruelity. I live outside of St. Louis, Missouri. A few years ago some loser beat his own dog to death. That is bad enough, but reports from his neighbors that called the police on him state he stopped to go in and grab another beer before returning to beating his dog with a bat. He got a similar sentence.

That guy obviously had problems. If he could do this to a dog, he could do it to his children, or anyone else. Why does he get off easy because it was a dog that was his victim?

All dogs carry the most prized traits we look for in humans. Unconditional love, honesty, and loyalty. They know nothing of deceit, hate, or evil. They are what we should strive to be everyday. So why is it people get away with this kind of stuff all the time? Why is it not as bad to kill a dog as it is to kill a human being?

This is a big problem that we don't always hear about, but it happens all the time.

What if I was that guys neighbor? What if I saw this going down, and I hopped the fence and took his bat away from him, and proceded to beat the life out of said loser? I will tell you what would happen, I would go to jail. You wouldn't here about what the neighbor was doing. You would only hear about crazy me killing his neighbor with a bat. This is because animal lovers are the minority.

There are people who own pets and keep them tucked away in the backyard only really interacting with them when it is time to feed them. And there are animal lovers, which I don't need to explain because that is who I am adressing right now. Even though we are increasing everyday in numbers. The latter is still the minority. To many people see pets as something you have to complete the "family" portrait. Not as something you take care of and love like your own children. This is not right.

I know I am rambling, but I have a lot to say. Bear with me please. :)

Here is a little background information about me. I just turned 27 April 10th, I am what some of you might call "a man's man". I am the foreman of a concrete company, and I am a freestyle fighter. I willingly step into a ring and get beat on by other people for the sport of it. Yet I am brought to tears hearing stuff like this. How could he have done this and heard the yelps and pain of something he says he loved so much, and not dropped to his knees in tears. Drunk or not, he is a threat to society and should be put away for the rest of his life. If my dogs yelps out of pain like that, it is the worst sound I could ever hear. This guy has no excuse, he never loved that dog, and his lawyer is a PoS for using that statement to try and defend him.

When Ares(my dog and best buddy) was born I was there, I took the membrane sac off of him when he was born. I don't care if that guy had him from day 1 or seven weeks. He never cared about that dog if he could do that. The laws need to be changed and people in power need to take notice. And I need to hit reply before I ramble any further. Thank you for your time.

i find your 'bessy wasn't too quick' joke in extremely bad taste.

now maybe not an eye for an eye for punishment but he deserved much more than what he got.

Headneck
04-27-2006, 06:11 AM
Yeah, I thought that was in bad taste as well. Bessy probably wasn't that quick, because Bessy doesn't understand what drunk is. Bessy didn't understand why someone she has loved so much was trying to hurt her like that. All she knew of safety until that day was with him. When the safest place you can think of now tries it's damnedest to hurt you, where would you run to? I feel so bad for any dog that has to go through something like that.
I mourn that dog and I never even met it. All I can do is hug my dog and shed a tear.

I am all for an eye for an eye justice. It is pretty low to take another human beings life, but it is even lower to treat an animal like that. I wouldn't walk across the street to **** on that guy if he was on fire. We don't need people like that on this planet, we have enough problems as it is. Anyone cowardly enough to take out his failed life on an animal is dirt and belongs with dirt.

In yesterdays newspaper I read this man appealed against his sentence and the appeal court decided jail for 23 weeks was too high and reduced it to 18 weeks. as he had no previous convictions.
That's British justice for you
