"Local animal control officials had responded to several calls about pit bulls running loose in the area. A week before Sullivan's death, pit bulls reportedly killed a German shepherd in the neighborhood.
Neely said Large ignored neighbors' complaints and authorities' warnings about her dogs. Citing Large's previous conviction for sexually molesting a 12-year-old friend of her son in 1998, the prosecutor said her criminal past showed a pattern of disregard for the community."
It's kind of depressing that it takes a perfect storm of circumstances - the owner is a woman with a conviction of child molestation, the victim is an elderly woman, the area was suffering from a spate of similar attacks, the victim's family worked hard to get something done, the community was frightened and angry - for something to happen.
Although I realize there's no way to prevent this, I would ask that this not become another supercharged bitchfest about pit bulls - from either side. The point in this case is not breed, it's the changing of legal responsibility for people who own dogs.
