What do you guys think about invisible fences for dogs/puppies? The kind that operates via a collar and gives a mild shock to the animal if it strays too far. Is this abusing the animal or harmful to it in any way other than the mild shock? Would it traumatize it? Please advise as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Rayna

No, not cruel, nor does it traumatize the dog. I have had one in the past, and would not ever have another. Dogs WILL escape it on occasion, and will NOT return.
It is not suitable for a lot of breeds because it does not keep anything else OUT.

I absolutely hate and and despise Invisible Fences, other feelings aside I think they are totally unreliable and give owners a false sense of security..there are dogs that have been known to run right through them. I think they are far too risky.

Is the mild shock considered abuse? It depends on who you ask...some having tested it on themselves will say the shock doesn't hurt at all and startles the animal more than anything, others say it is downright inhumane...
Will they traumatize a dog? Depends on the individual dog and its level of hardness.
My current foster for example is very *hard* and if you put one on her she would probably roll her eyes and dash right through the boundries as if to say "Is that all you got?"
A softer dog however may freak out over the correction.

I agree that I don't care too much for them. I once read somewhere that once the dog gets beyond it "once" they will forever know that there is another side beyond the shock. I think there is no substitution for the real thing a "real fence." or specialized fenced area for the pup if the yard is too big to fence.
Plus there is the fact from the other side that it doesn't keep anything from getting into the yard that could harm or intice the pup.
