I got a new puppy a little over a week ago. When I brought her home she was roughly 8 weeks old (can't tell for SURE because she was from a shelter and the pups weren't born there). She is a German Shepherd (mix, maybe). Her mother was also at the shelter and she definately looked to be a pure breed GSD, but no idea about the father. When I brought her home she was almost completely tan, except for a black mask and a little black on her tail. Now her entire back is turning black and it is moving down her sides a little bit. If this color gets a little darker she will look an aweful lot like her mother (or any other GSD). I am just wondering if it is normal for a puppy's colors to change a little as they mature?

Usually done with most of the color changes by the time they're 3 years old :D

I have a shepherd mix too and she had a little black on her muzzle and ears and back but mostly tan and now its starting to get blacker in those areas and covering more than the tan did. :D I'll try to find a early picture of when I brought her home.

Yes, the coat will change. When we first got Zeus, he was a pale yellowish blonde color with black mask. But his coat eventually changed. Now he's more of a creamy beige, and his mask has darkened as well.
LoL, my husband rolled his eyes at the change and said "Drat. Isn't is just like a 'natural blonde' to actually be a brunette."

it was the opposite for me our puppies were light brown with black faces but they all changed to completely brown so I think it is a normal thing

I figured that this was normal, but I just wanted to make sure. When our other dog was a puppy this didn't happen. He was all tan then and is still the same now.

A lot of breeds develop color as they get older. Jack Russels, dalmations, other multicolored breeds get their freckles and colors in the first year of life. Watch what develops! :)
