Reading all these threads regarding Glucosamine and its benefits, prompts me to ask a question. I've heard good things about it. My mum takes it for her arthritis, and a friend of hers has two little terriers that have it for their arthritis, and she swears by it.

Max has arthritis, although its only relatively mild at the moment. He has the omega's, and sardines, etc but want to get some Glucosamine for him.

My question is and forgive me for sounding dumb  Is it the same glucosamine as humans take? I didn't think there was a different one just for dogs, but wanted to check. If its the same I can get some, from the chemist or health shop tomorrow when I go shopping. So what am I looking for exactly and in what dosage for Max? Is it just called Glucosamine, or does it have some other name?

Sorry for the questions

Thanks in advance :)

Glucosamine and chondroitin can be found in many different forms. Glucosamine in a pure form, or combined with chondroitin, can be purchased in health food stores, at veterinary clinics, and in pet supply catalogs.

Not all glucosamine and chondroitin products are created equal, however. The difference in various products lies in the dosing, carriers, vitamins, minerals, and purity of the ingredients. Products that contain human grade glucosamine and chondroitin are much more likely to be of high quality and in a purer form. In addition to ingredients, the concentration of actual glucosamine and chondroitin vary from product to product. Products designed for dogs often have ascorbic acid or manganese to help aid in the uptake of glucosamine in the canine. Canine products may be flavored or fortified with other minerals. The most expensive product is not always the best. Compare the ingredients between products to ensure that you are getting what you pay for. Some of the most popular products for canines include Drs. Foster and Smith's Joint Care, Cosequin made by Nutramax, and Glycoflex

I use Nutri Aid GCM which contains both Vitamin C and Manganese so my dogs can utilize the product properly. I personally have had best results with a glucosamine supplement that contains: Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin Sulphate, MSM, Vitamin C and Mineral Manganese.

So, if you do put your dog on a human grade Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM...then make sure you either give vitamin C or Manganese to help the dog's body absorb it.

Also, pay attention to how much to give per body weight and follow this. My supplement is in liquid form and gives the exact amount to give per body weight. I have had wonderful results using this and other supplements.;)

Ok. I was just curious because it says on the container that they should be given daily for 4-6 weeks and then every other day after the initial period. I didn't know if that applied for dogs with some type of arthritic condition or all dogs.

I don't see the harm in giving it to them everyday, regardless.

I have just put Midnite on Glucosamine/Chondoritin 1000mg/800mg and it is human grade. When you say vitamin C do you mean ester-C?
