I can't claim to have taught Bimmer any tricks, but he's always had the most charming habit: I look at him and ask him "Where are your manners?" and he either drops to the most perfect lay down, head erect, ears up, or he sits beautifully. I didn't teach him that, and I don't think anyone else did, as he was thrown out with his three siblings when he was about three months old. and I've had him since he was four and a half months old. I just asked him that one day when he was being rambunctions and needed to settle down and he did it. Shiva's learned to do it now from watching him. Of course, everyone thinks he is just the perfect gentleman, and mostly, he is. Shiva, however, is not and I don't expect she ever will be a perfect lady. She's a brat - a sweet, adorable, lovable, rollicking angel - but a brat, nonetheless.

"Go to work" is Bimmer's cue to herd the cows, and hopefully, Shiva will learn that as well.

They each have a different whistle to come to, but that gets amusing as there is a mockingbird that likes to tease the dogs, flitting to different places and whistling.

Wow, that is a smart dog. I wish my dog was that smart...
We have birds that attach our dog sometimes. He run because
he is scared of them :)

Zip can get his brush whenever we say, "Zippy, go get your brush!" But we have to announciate (sp?) BRUH-USH so he doesn't get it confused with "bone". LOL ;)

Maddie knows sit, down, stay (in any position), roll over, play dead, shake, high five, hup (jump up), jump (over), off (get down), wait, shut it (she shuts doors, cabnets... anything I point and tell her to), back up, settle, leave it, bring it, spit it out, get a rope, and get her squirrel.
Her squirrel is her favorite toy that I can tell her to get and she'll pass up the ropes and the bones to get it. :) She's so smart... I hate to brag, (actually I love to brag about my dog!) but did I mention that it took me 4 mins to teach her to shake without ever doing it before and she does it every time she's asked :D

I thought Shelties were smart... our Nikki is, but she's old and arthritic so we don't ask her to sit or anything anymore. I'm sure your dogs are smart in their own way. Sometimes Maddie is too smart for her own good and she gets her self into trouble!

My Saluki Caspian just does the usual( sit, stay, lie down etc) but my collie Merlyn herds things. We don't live on a farm and he's never been taught to herd It's just instinct.
He herds Caspian my young cousins and any stray children he may see.
It's great because If my Saluki won't come back when we're out I just send Merlyn to fetch him. He's made walking a whole lot easier.

Rylie knows how to say his "prayers" (roll over, cross front paws, look cute) and "make the puppy talk" (his stuffed animals) - My husband hates that trick because he's petrified Rylie will try to make all the birds "talk" during pheasant hunting season. He's never done that except once when my husband told him to "make the puppy talk".

Shasta will heel, come, down etc. She also knows "slow" where she'll slow down and step gingerly. She'll also go find her "bone". If we ignore her, she will pick the "bone" up and put it in our lap. If we ignore her further she will pick up the bone and throw it at us until we pay attention. When she feels like it she will pretend to be dumb, only when she's too lazy to be obedient.

Oh definatly lol. All of my dogs are trained in general obedience through their puppy years it helps once i start training for the sledding. So yeah each and evey one of my dogs can sit, stay, lay down, and stop when ask to and a good few can speak on command. But thats not so special huh. Well I do have some personal achievments some have made.

Well lets see here lol Hitch can climb ladders lol
Stinker can chew through gates
Buck will jump up into my arms if i pat my shoulders and say up (something he never grew out of so now when I say up to him im usually going down lol)
Tracker will howl on command which is really cute lol.
Shady will beg on her hind legs on command if i say Please
Rajah will run to the door and look out when I tell him to go watch for company and will not move until they get to the house lol.

And of course my poor forgotten pitties
Both Zeus and Tundra know the general tricks and each can also speak, shake, roll over, and beg up on command. If I tell Zeus to get a toy he will and brign it to me to play with. And Tundra does a little dance which i turned into a trick after she did it for so long she used to spin in circles when she would get excited when she was a puppy and I just kept on saying Dance when she would do it and give her a treat to where now i can say Tundra dance for me she will have a couple times asking for it and its really cute lol.

and of course you know Zeus and Tundra

Dutch knows all the basics - sit, down, over (roll over), paw, high-five, wait (stay or stop), come, drop it, up (if he's sitting/laying down and I need him to move), and off. He does "leave it" so well I can put cold cuts on the floor infront of him, tell him to leave it, walk out of the room, and when I come back, he's still sitting there, staring at the cold cuts with a puddle of drool between his paws. "Take it" is his release from "leave it".

He also knows "jump" for the hurdles in agility, "through" to jump through hoops, "weave" to walk between agility poles/my legs, "spin" to spin in circles, "inside" for either going in his crate or getting in the car, and "find it" for playing games of hide-and-seek :D .

Yes, I spend a lot of time training my dog.

My boys can do all the basics, I am training them in obedience but they do have a couple of unusual things. When they have been in the river or the sea I can tell them to 'shake' and they will. It's good cos I don't get drowned. Also Fenn my 2year old collie is facinated by torches and lights. He will chase a torch beam anywere, even up the wall, he was about 12" off the celing last time.

Victor knows all the basics..Mary on the other hand had pups when most dogs are learning the fun stuff. She just refused for so many years. Now that she is 10 she has suddenly learned to sit pretty! Horaaay for Mary. She won't speak yet, but she sneezes instead. So when we "pratice" I tell vic to speak and Mary to sneeze! We allow old girls shortcuts don't we?

Jake has sit, stay, come, lie-down, up, down , paw, and we're working on roll-over here and there. We're also working on when he's told to stay, doing so as a piece of kibble skips across the floor in front of his nose and other distractions....however, I'm not at the point of leaving him to guard a plate of roast beef yet :D

My sheltie loves showing off his fancy tricks, so he knows a few.
"Bang" -roll over and play dead (although he pops up too quickly for it to be "dead") :D
Shake, other paw, both paws
Roll over
Speak
Pick a hand (show him two closed hands, he will sniff & pick the one with a snack in it & put his paw on it)

He will also balance a treat on his nose and wait until you tell him ok, then flip his head a little bit and catch it in midair. We've timed him at 3 minutes of waiting with it on his nose, then I felt sorry for him & let him have it. Usually I just do 5 seconds.

He is working now on "leave it, come" -throwing a frisbee across the lawn, then telling him to drop it, leave it where it is, and come back. He has issues with that, he'll come halfway back to me, then loop back to pick up the frisbee. He loves his frisbee too much to leave it 20 feet away!

It's hard!

You don't want to know how long it took.... 5 months of trying it 3 times in a row almost every day. He is a master at "stay" (I can leave him in a down stay and leave his sight or walk more than 50 feet away and he'll stay put), which helped. When we practiced, I put the treat on his nose, said "stay... stay..." and held my hands around his nose, then kept loosening them a little. He would wiggle his head and it would fall off, and I would put it back twice, then make him do a shake hands or something & give him the treat.

It was mostly hard getting him to follow what was going on. Once the lightbulb clicked, at 4 months 6 days, we were golden. ;)

Gus can do all the basics, shake paw, other paw, both paws, stands up on hind legs, crawls, speaks, dances (really funny! if you ask him to dance he jiggles about all over the place!!), Sings, gives kisses on demand, he does the leave it come, also when I throw something and tell him to stay he waits till i tell him to go get it, get the keys! he finds the keys when they are hidden or lost, he will get a toy by name if you ask for it (go get your rope tuggie he gets it!)
Oh yeah and he speaks English, French and Flemish!
He's a real smarty!! And likes to show off!!!
Problem is he learns things in about an hour and then gets bored again!

Gustav
02-26-2005, 09:51 AM
Don't know if anyone watches Crufts, but he does the send away and lie down at distance as well! You send your dog off about 20 meters or so and tell them to lie down and they should (and I mean should!!) lie down where they are! We've not got this perfected yet but i'm working on it!!!

Debi
02-26-2005, 10:57 AM
Both do sit, lay...and will give a paw when asked......that's it. When I tell Ham to 'stay'.....he usually will decide I must mean for him to stay with me. He will always insist on first seeing if I'm serious before listening...I always give the command..like 'sit'...but always have to follow with 'what did I say'...then he'll do it. I've never seen him do anything....even when telling him to 'settle' when he is being a maniac......he will after I add 'what did I say' lol Addie listens immediately....then she'll look at him with that smirk that says 'see, I'M the good one'.

Well he can jump ( with grabbing by the shoulder), he can put his feet on your shoudlers, but thats not tricks thats work :o

Sunnypup
02-26-2005, 01:49 PM
lets see, since he's only just over 3 months we are far from perfect on these but Sunny knows sit, lay down, paw (shake), highfive, wave, dance (sort of a twisty, jumpy circle motion until I say to stop), crawl (only for a few feet then he gets annoyed and walks upright), stay(only from a few feet away yet), touch (hold my hand out as a target and say touch, bumps his nose to it), come, wait for me (if he gets ahead of me on the trail he'll sit down and wait until I'm there then keep walking), off, jump, down (as in don't jump on me), go say hello (waits until I give a cue to greet people at the door, has been very useful in curbing excitement peeing  ) we are working on free-shaping with a clicker to get him to shake on command, like he does when he has had his bath or was just out in the rain. I just think that would be a cute alternative so when someone says "shake" he actually shakes off :) (I know, I'm goofy) and pottys on command (most of the time...okay, who am I kidding, when he feels like it ) yeah, that's about it. He's pretty bright and when he wants a treat (like anything I happen to be holding in my hands that is a food-like substance) he'll run through most of his tricks and try to get it :) silly baby. yeah, I do sound like a disgusting "my child is an honor student and your child is just plain dumb" kinda mom don't I ? Sorry, I have no life so I have lots of time to train my puppy (ooh and also we are teaching him to put his toys away...okay, really done now)

I absolutely LOVE to teach tricks to my dogs. I think that teaching tricks helps build the bond and the communication between humans and pets - AND it makes our pets more acceptable to other people because tricks are so fun to watch.

All of my dogs learn the basics in obedience and agility (heel [forwards, backwards, sideways], sit, down, stay, come, drop on recall, send out to jumps [high, bar and broad jumps], weave, teeter, dog walk and a-frame, chute) plus some learn retrieving the dumbbell, directed retrieves and jumping, scent articles, signal exercise.

But for tricks we have these:

All spin in circles (their choice which way - Dora goes both ways)
All wave good-bye (each has their own twist on that too .. *L*)

Trick (German shepherd): covers her nose when I ask "what stinks?", backs up when I say "you're too close!" (can back up clear across a parking lot), throws a toy into the air for me to catch, puts her head into a collar, pulls it out when I'm not looking and takes things out of a garbage can and then runs back and puts her head back in the collar (for an act we do), brings me my keys, the dog dishes, etc. when I ask, jumps over the other dogs, speaks and "sings", fetches a beer from the fridge, weaves through my legs.

Kylee (chow chow) - speaks and whispers, backs up, jumps over other dogs, brings slippers, etc., finds a $20 bill out of a pile of $1 bills, finds a card out of a group of cards (both scent exercises but the audience doesn't always know .. *L*), weaves through my legs.

Dora (chow chow) - stands square and wiggles her tail when I raise one finger (for conformation), rubs her nose with her paw when I ask "does your nose tickle?", weaves through my legs.

Tori (German shepherd) - spins like a whirling dervish and when I say "down" she drops so fast that she spins a half circle on the floor .. *L* .. she also covers her face with both paws when I say "peekaboo!". That's about all she can do - she's my "special needs" child.

Khana (chow chow) - speaks and whispers, covers her face with one paw when I ask "are you embarassed?", stands on her hind legs ("be a bear!" .. *L*), walks backwards, shakes her head "no" when I ask her questions (like "Is Holly going to beat you today?"), does a "dance" where she moves back and forth with her front legs, as I move back and forth to the music, weaves through my legs. Khana is just 18 months and I think she's got a great future full of tricks in front of her! *LOL*

Having two breeds that tend to scare some people, it's great that I can get them to do things to show that they have training and have good personalities. People really relax when the dogs start to do tricks, and it's a valuable thing to work on with any dog.

I went through a period of teaching the dogs "paw/face" tricks (hence the various ones for each dog .. *L*).

With Dora, I was able to shape it because she had an itchy nose, I guess, and every time she'd rub her nose I'd mark the behavior and reward it.

But with the others, I would lightly blow in their faces and they'd rub with a paw and I'd mark and reinforce. As soon as it was consistent, I put it on verbal and/or signal cue. I let each dog kind of put their own personality into it. Dora rubbed her nose, Trick laid down and covered her nose, Tori used both paws, and Khana used one paw but would do it sitting up. I like that they each have their own little quirks that make the trick their own instead of just like all the others.

Here's Khana covering her nose:
