ever since i had roxy taken out of my life, ive found myself hating myself more everyday. i would never want to replace her but i really need a companion. this will never mean anything to me like replacing her, she will always be with me, mentally. but i have been researching and trying to find the perfect dog for our household. i want a dog that i can cuddle up with. i dont want it to have really short hair because i want her to be really comfortable to cuddle up with. my mom wants one that doesnt shed, is really easy to train, and has kinda short hair. we will be keeping her in the house due to not having a fenced yard. im not sure about housetraining but i might get to training her to use the bathroom outside. this time we will be getting 2 of them, two girls; because it was absolutely the worst feeling and site seeing and thinking about roxy just inside of the house, bored for 8 whole hours, just pacing back and forth eagerly waiting for us to come home and play with her, looking up every few minutes wondering how much longer it will be until we returned. looking as if she was abandoned. i must have started crying while sleeping and thinking about her in class. but i want a dog that wont really bark and will be defensive over me. is small to medium size. doesnt shed, or not that much. easy to train. etc etc. and i was thinking about a min pin, a basenji, a chihuahua, and a havanese. i was really thinking about the havanese, what do you think? then maybe the min pin. if there are any other breeds, please post those too.

If you want a dog that is easy to trian, I would NOT recomend the Basenji for that reason and you said you don't have a fenced in yart. Basenjis are a VERY premitive breed and I don't think they fit your criteria to well. When it comes to training, Basenjis care nothing about pleasing you (at least most are that way. Very independant) and can be very hard to train. (I don't know about Chis a whole bunch. And I don't think Min Pins are the best breed when it comes to training either because they have a stubborn streak and they can bark a lot, but correct me if I'm wrong.)
When I was reading you post a Poodle came to mind. They are easy to train, don't shed, are 'fluffy', and come in tiny, small or medium. I think that would be a good breed for you.
The Havanese sounds good to but I've heard that they are very hard to house break.

My chihuahua girl is exactly how you described. Exept for the long hair. But's chi's come in long hair also.
I would not recommend a Min Pin if you are unexpeirenced with them.
Here are more breeds you could consider.
-Labradoodle
-Schnoodle
-Affenpinsher
-Bichon Frise
-Austrailian Terrier
-Chi-Poo
-Dandie Dinmont Terrier
-Italian Greyhound
-Maltese**So Cute!!
-Malti-Poo**Extra Cute
-Toy Poodle
-YorkiePoo
-Yorkshire Terrier

thanks. i talked to my mom, narrow minded, and she said there is no way ever she will ever buy a poodle. she says they are purely ugly. oh well i was reading about basenjis and they seem awesome. you you talking from experience? it said something about it being ok if you dont have a yard, as long as it goes out for walks. and the min pin i was thinking about them because it can be a small dog like my mom preferred but i want a defensive dog where it will bark at whoever taunts me or touches me (i dont get along with many people around here, many of you know) and the chihuahua, i talked my mom into thinking about a long haired chihuahuas they look adorable and small. but the basenji. i was thinking about a maltese or a shih tzu but i really dont like how they have that long hair like that, i love how roxy's hair was but i doubt i will find another one like her. shes a special one. my mom has a small allergy problem and it says that basenjis are self cleaning (like cats) and dont have the usual dog odor and that it would be good for people with a slight allergy problem. but im still not sure after what rose's gal said.

12-15-2004, 08:32 PM
after i think about it, i might scratch out the basenji idea. im looking for a dog that goes by those decriptions i said and also i want a "cute and adorable" dog. i want one that is cute and you cant resist from picking her up and cuddling with her. basenjis might not be the kind of dog im looking for. neither will a min pin. a long haired chi maybe?

12-15-2004, 08:47 PM
Chihuahua's arwe wondeful dogs. My chihuahua is the sweetest BUT if someone messes with me that she dont know she WILL bite. Most Chihuahua's are like this. I cuddle with Tink all the time. She sleeps right by me and she's small enough she dont take up alot of space. Basenji's also cant bark. They Yodel..if I'm not mistaken. I really think you should consider a long/short coat chihuahua. Mine is short coated.
Also, Pomerainians,Rat Terriers,and Dachsunds are sweetie's too.
But see, I prefer the Pitties and Staffies. I love them!!lol

yeah im really thinking about chis now. i really want a pom but my mom doesnt like long haired dogs becuase they get dirty to easily and sometimes when they use the bathroom the feces get stuck on their hair on their bottoms and its a big mess trying to wash it off everytime. and yeah thats true basenjis dont bark, they yedol alot. i dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing but oh well. i heard chis are stubborn though. like its really hard to train them, let alone housetraining. is this true?
southern_girl09
12-15-2004, 09:58 PM
Mine wasnt. Actually she was really easy to train. And she isnt stubborn at all. She listens very well. Have you checked www.dogbreedinfo.com? They have all kinds of breeds.
Renee750il
12-15-2004, 11:15 PM
That's a good call on deciding against the Basenji. They are hunters and need to run. Just walking and running with a human on a leash isn't nearly enough exercise for one.
Have you considered going to a shelter or rescue and looking? Especially consider dogs that are older puppies or adults. I remember how much trouble you had with training because you had no help at all with Roxy while you were at school; with an older pup or dog you can usually bypass the housetraining crazies, and even if you do have to do some housetraining it doesn't take as long since their bodies are more developed and they don't have the problem of not being able to hold it long enough.

yeah i saw those dogs on there too. my aunt she breeds mixed breeds. she isnt really a big breeder but she breeds them for herself and for relatives. right now she is trying to breed roxy with a havanese. theyre doign great together. they are the smartest pair ever. my uncle locked up roxy in her crate becuase he was trying to get her to use the bathroom outside and then the havanese strotted in (he has the cutest penguin stroll ever!) and they both worked together and opened the lock. they sleep together and never leave each other. ok so does anyione have any other info or suggestions?? and chis the "cuddly" kinda dogs? i might try to get my mom to let me go check out teh animal shelter sometime.

I don't really have any experience with Chis but I do know that they like to be cuddled!!! Good websites to check out to learn more about the temperment of the Chi are

www.dogfancy.com

Anyways, good luck to you!
(And I'm :) that you decided not to get the Basenji. I've done research on them and I didn't think they fit your criteria to well. Ya, Southern Girl09, I was wondering about that breed list too! lol But at least you didn't make that up yourself with all of the Labradoodles and stuff. I would have been concerned. lol :p)
crazydog
12-16-2004, 03:27 PM
oh i never knew that. thanks for the info. but youre saying all of those dogs that are mixed breeds all came from bad breeders? you shouldnt mix breed? wow i never knew that. i always thought it was just like normal breeding.
basically i want a house dog. a dog that can live in the house and doesnt need to be outdoors. the cuddling part and the easy to train part is just an add on. i just think itll be great to have one of them becuase after having roxy, training is ALOT harder than i thought. ill do more research on the chi to see if its right for me. i heard from many people that its really stubborn and is hard to train but i guess not all chis are the same. in the meantime, keep the suggestions coming. theyre all great and very helpful

You might want to look into a Cocker Spaniel. My Sadie is a sweetheart and only wants to please us. She will jump up and sit on your lap every chance she gets, even when you don't want her too.
I've heard different things about Cocker's being snippy. But I could never imagine Sadie being that way. She's a complete doll ! I call her flopsy mopsy lol

I would reccomend a Yorkshire terrier or a Mini Poodle or even a standard poodle. those breeds dont shed and can have long hair or even short hair. good luck!!!!!

Serena- Sorry about that. I didnt make it up my self they were on that site.
Carzy- Yes.. Chihuahua's are the ones that love to be cuddled and are very funny and love to be the center of attention. There are probally alot of Small chi mixes in shelters and rescue's near you.

Oh, I think a remember reading something in a DogFancy magazine about dogs that are good for allergy sufferers. Let me go get it.......here is the list of dogs they gave that are better for Canine Allergens:
Most of the following breeds shed less because they have only a single layer of hair: Basenji, Bedlington Terrier, Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Irish Water Spaniel, Italian Greyhound, Kerry Blue Terrier, Malates, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Schnauzer, Sof Coated Wheaten Terrier, and Xlolitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless Dog).
Those IMO are only some of the breeds that allergens can have. Anyways, I hope the Chi works out for you! :)

My grandmother had two Schnauzers (Touser, and Cindy). They are adorable! Terrier's are great too. However, my Westie is very loving and will allow you to snuggle with her, but she very rarely will come up and snuggle with you. Not being snobby, but she's independant and she JUST turned one in Sept. They're alot of dog in a small body, LOL. But, that is just my dog's personality.

Rose'sGal, that's a good list. And it made me think, too, Crazydog: maybe you could look into adopting a retired racing dog like a whippet or one of the greyhounds. They need to be exercised in an enclosed area, but other than that they just love to lounge quietly around the house and stay right next to you.
Terriers are wonderful dogs and I just love them, but they can be a real handful! Somehow I doubt that Crazydog's mom would be terribly inclined toward dealing with one. BUT . . . if you look to adopt an adult dog it might not be that much of an issue. They're incredibly smart and once they're adults figure out very quickly what they need to do to keep their lives comfy. ;)

is there even dog under this description: a short haired one so it doesnt get dirty as easily if its rolls in the lawn and that it wont get poo stuck on its bottom hair so often; but long enough so its cuddly and nice to lay with. haha i know it cant be both long and short but anyways i want a medium sized dog. my mom wouldnt allow a big dog in and i dont want a small dog. i seem a little picky, well ALOT, but im just trying to fidn the perfect one. i really like how the malteses are so cute but its long haired. and a greyhound is too big for my mom to accept. im still thinking about the chihuahua. i might be albe to go to the shelter soon so ill tell you about the dogs there. so do you recommend a puppy or a dog. will dogs look as "cute" as puppies?? anyways ill tell you how it works out
and also just call my francis or franky or andy, CD was just a name i had to make up to ask an urgent question about roxy but then i ended up beign addicted to this site.
Hmm.. I know your mom wants a short-coated breed, but have you considered a Papillon? They are very small and affectionate, they act more like bigger dogs than small dogs. The thing with them is that they have longer coats than what you're looking for, and they aren't hypoallergenic. (unless you get a Poodle, Bichon or Coton de Tulear, there aren't hypoallergenic dogs)
They are a single-coated breed, (only one layer of hair, no 'undercoat') and they are not fluffy-puffy like a pomeranian, but instead they have fine silky hair. They're a lower maintenance breed, you do have to comb their ear fringe anywhere from every day to once a week. (if they have so much fringe that it mats easily, sometimes having a groomer thin it is helpful) If they have an abundant coat (My Papillon has a shorter coat on his body than most paps, but very long hair on his ears and tail) they should be brushed every day or two to prevent any mats.
Just something to consider. They're cool little dogs.

12-17-2004, 05:22 PM
Definitely a good breed to consider, Rip's!
The reason I suggested looking at the Whippets is because they are considerably smaller than a Greyhound, as is an Italian Greyhound, and although I really don't consider a Greyhound a large dog, I'm sure your Mom (and lots of other people too) would. But then, compared to my Monsters . . . :D

yeah i remember looking at papillions. they look really awesome but i really dont think i will cross over one in our animal shelter or any breeders around here. ive never seen a papillion in real life. but ill still look into them. do they get that doggy odor easily? somehow after we gave roxy a bath, about a week later, she started to smell really bad. the dog odor smell. she is inside 24/7 so i dont know how it happens. and also what is this double and single coat thing? ive been thinking about that for a while.

Since your mom has allergies a poodle (in any of the sizes) would be great. They are very intelligent and train very easily. I have 2 standards - my female is about 48 lbs and my male is about 62 lbs. I do not keep them in any of the typical poodle clips - they look & act like "regular" dogs. They are very entertaining and they love to cuddle. They don't shed but they do need to be clipped about every 8 wks or so but with the short clip like mine have many people do it themselves instead of bringing them to a groomer.
crazydog
12-17-2004, 09:07 PM
yeah but the thing is my mom doesnt like poodles. thats what i dont get about her. i think of a dog as a friend, a companion, just a human being in a different form. well, for my mom, if its ugly, its not going in the house. if it pees in a wrong place, its out. if it has any kind of hair that she doesnt like, its staying 20 feet away from her. its either "shes too ugly" or "shes no trained" or "i dont like how her hair is". i tried to talk her into getting me a poodle after i saw them om animal planet and she said she would rather get me a rottweiler. when i asked why she says it looks disgusting with its curly hair and how it has a rep with only the balls of hair on its feet, its tail, etc. it dont really matter to me, as long as i get a nice, cuddly, protective dog then im happy. its not like my mom ever does anything for the dogs. but, after she saw how cute roxy can get (she gets on her hind legs and does a funny jump and jumps all aroudn the house on her hind legs when someone comes home. its funny and cute) she decided that she wanted to get closer with her so she helped along by taking her out to use the bathroom, filling up her food bowls, and helping me clean up after her. so do you think i will ever find a maltese that will look like roxy?
EDIT: i found a breeder. it happens she has a website. do you think they seem like good breeders? http://www.royalacreskennel.com/index.html
Renee750il
12-17-2004, 09:44 PM
Too many dogs, too many different kinds. And there's no mention of bloodlines or any other indication of attention to the genetic fitness of the parents. And yet they are charging legitimate breeder prices for their dogs!
And then there's the issue of the "Malti-Poos" . . .
Truthfully, I think I'd stay away from them.
RedHotDobe
12-18-2004, 04:50 PM
I agree with Renee. There are no pedigrees, no statements saying what health tests they do for the dam and sire, and I presume they don't even register with the AKC or UKC.
Even better, they list their business hours... Breeders don't have "business hours."
Another thing, they list one of their Pekingnese(? I guess that's what she's supposed to be) as retired. Retired from breeding??
But just the listing of the number of breeds they "breed," or in other words mass produce, would send me running.
crazydog
12-18-2004, 04:59 PM
yeah i was thinking the same too. with all of those puppies and the whole business hours thing, got me thinking shes got a puppy mill. yeah i talked to my mom and she said shell bring me to the animal shelter tomorrow if she gets the chance. finally ill get the chance to look around for different dogs. shes staying outside in teh car though because it really smells in there and the last time i went (which was a long time ago) i got scared and went home becuase there were big german sheperds and alaskan malamutes barking at me with their big loud barks. but this time i hope ill find a good puppy. im not going to get one until next summer though because thats when ill have time for the dog, but the trip to the shelter will at least help me think about a breed and to go home and do some research on it.

Just wanted to add, even though it has little relevance to this thread...Labradoodles are becoming a registered breed. I also hate the cutesy names. There's just something painfully amateur about it IMO.

Not that I'm a big fan of the AKC; I'm not, but at least they pay lip service to SOME ethical standards.

haha she didnt believe me that they were poodles. she said they were HUGE and when i said theyre poddles she said noooooo. and i just came back from the animal shelter and, even though it smelled really really bad, the dogs and puppies were all so cute and awesome. there were alot of cute puppies that will grow into big dogs but they were so small and i wished they would stay that size becuase i will kill my mom begging her for them. they were dobermans, german sheperds, etc. i did see some really cute chihuahuas. and the saddest part was when i was walking down the aisle, alot of dogs woke up, walked over to the gate, and started whining. i felt so bad for them because there was no way in the world that i would be able to get them. there was also a pitbull that wasa stray that was the skinniest dog ever! you could easily see the ribs and spine from a mile back. and it started whining and sitting down in front of the gate. there were doberman pinschers puppies that were the cutest pups ive seen before. do dobermans grow big and can i keep them in the house? i doubt it. i really want to go back and adopt a puppy but when i was in the car on the way back i was talking to my mom about getting a dog for my birthday over the summer. i decided unless my mom changes her attitude towards dogs, im not going to get one. although i was really po'ed i just dont want to see a dog suffer everyday. my mom said that we wouldnt be bringing the dog to the vet because theres no need for it. she says that they dont have to get shots and what not. and she said that they will not be aloud to step a foot into the house. she said she doestn care if it has short hair like a chihuahua, she thinks they smell and she doesnt want them ruining the house, so she said they will be staying out in the garage (a one car garage) the whole time. and if i want to play with it then i have to go out there and play with them. even if its winter, she wouldnt allow them to come in, a blanket will warm them up enough. i really dont want a dog to be treated this way so i decided that we're not going to get one. im goign to act sad for the next month and if she asks whats wrong then ill say that i want a puppy but she wont treat it right. that way ill try her to give in, hee hee. but thanks for all your time everyone and if anyone has any suggestions then please post. sorry for taking up your time too, since it came out to this.

Hi there,
Has anybody suggested to you a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
They have something for eveyone, they come in 4 different colors.
Ruby (all red), Balck and Tan, tri color and Blenhiem (red and white). They have a medium length coat that requires some grooming and they are very trainable, cuddley and sociable with other dogs, cats or most anything else.
They are very healthy with hardly any hereditary problems and are a very popular pet, show and obedience dog in Australia. Look them up for yourself on the net.

I don't see "Labradoodles" becomming a registered breed any time soon, least not with any reputable registry...I don't for one second think the Labrador and Poodle community will sit by while both their respective breeds are destroyed by scummy breeders....the only people still breeding lab x poodle crosses are mutts for bucks puppy pimps...This cross originally started in Australia where they were hoping that crossing the Lab with Poodle would result in a guide dog for allergy sufferers....it failed miserably...genetics don't work that way...
I'll have to find out sometime when I'm less tired...but it was definitely the KC from what I heard.

You have my vote for a papillon. Very smart, afectionate and loyal dogs. They say they are the number one in obedience. I've had small dogs all of my life, most of them chihuahuas until I got my first male papillon. That little guy got under my skin from the first days. If you'll get one you'll have no desire to get another one. You can find one at puppyfind.com. I know, not the best place to look for a puppy but they have no fault and they deserve a chance. A lot of them come from champion blood lines, not that it matters to me but there are a few responsible breeders over there. You can also adopt a papillon from slpapillons.com Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see a link for the rescue papillons. I could recomend you the breeder I got my second papillon from. I waited a few months for him but I'm glad I did. I wanted a puppy from a specific pair. Whatever puppy you'll get, I hope he/she will fill up your life again. Each and every dog is special in his own way.

Well, I didn't have time to read through every post, but I wanted to add the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to your list. They are VERY affectionate, bred for that specific reason for King Charles the third, I think. Mine doesn't bark much, they love to have other dogs with them, they are not Real long haired but not short and very cute. Mine doesn't shed very much either. I think all small dogs are harder to housebreak. I've read somewhere that small dogs have smaller bladders and not proportionate to their size, even though they are small. They need to be let out more often. Another reason small dogs are harder to housebreak is becuase while a great dane will leave a lake or great mountaine behind, a small dog can walk behind the couch and you wouldn't find it for months. Do a search on Cavaliers..I think you'll find them adorable. I like the Beigham.
