My mom just inhereited a new poodle who is about a year old (it is a miniature, not too tiny-the poodles owner just died of lung cancer). For all of you poodle owners out there....can you recommend a good book I can get for her on the breed? She has had big dogs all of her life and isn't really accustomed to this new small dog. I'm sure it will be a great addition to her household-her beloved chow/shephard (mutt) just recently died and she has been missing his company so much......Thanks for your help, I always get great advice on here :D

I can't recommend a good book on the breed but I can share my experiences with them. After getting my 1st standard poodle I will happily admit to all that I am totally hooked on this breed. :) There should be no difference other than size between the 3 different varieties - toy, mini & standard. They are wonderful additions to a family. They are extremely intelligent and a joy to train, however, with their smarts it can sometimes get quite interesting when they figure they know a better way to accomplish something!:) They excel at obedience as well as agility. They love to retrieve, swim and be with their humans. They are also great therapy dogs. They do require regular grooming and need to be clipped. I take my 2 to a groomer approx. every 8 wks and keep them in a simple even cut all over which is very easy to maintain. If you mom is braver than I, I am sure she could do the clipping herself as I know alot of people do. She will also need to pluck the hair from the inside of the ears as this will reduce the chance of ear infections.

They can be quite the clowns as I have found with my 6 yo male, Farley. He is the resident goofball in my house while Chloe, my 4 yo, is the gentle one - although she has no problem keeping up with Farley!

I think your mom will truly enjoy sharing her home with her new furpal!:)
