I recently got a new dog from a rescue group. I'm not entirely sure what breed he is. I've been told various things such as Chow, Husky, German Shepard, and even some sort of sheep dog... Can anyone tell what breed(s) he is? Thanks! His name is Josiah, by the way. :D

He looks Husky/Chow, but could be any number of breeds. Very handsome boy and he looks like he is adjusting well!
I can see all or none of those breeds in there lol. You'll probably never know for sure. Maybe even malamute? He looks like a good sized dog. It doesn't matter anyway. You've found a great friend and I'm so happy you rescued. :)

hard to tell, but in the first photo it looks like akita would also be a possibility for a breed involved in the mix. also keep in mind, any mixed breed dog is not necessarily just a crossbreed of two purebred dogs.
and i agree with ash, he's very handsome! :)

Thanks everyone!
Yeah, he does have a small purple spot on his tongue in the back.
Are chows the only type of dog that have those colorings on their tongue?
All of your dogs are so adorable! :)

I don't think so... My daughter's black lab has a spot ...( though his past breeding isn't known ) but one of my Goldens had a small spot and I had 15 generations in his pedigree,,, all pure.

I see gsd x malamute or gsd x husky. but I also see chow in him. the first pic he strikes me as a husky or malamute cross with chow. second pic looks like malamute crossed with gsd.
whatever he is, he's beautiful. looks like a big sweety.
congrats to you for rescueing.
Mav has spots on his tongue!

Thank you. He is a big sweety! He thinks he's small enough to sit on my lap, and he's always trying to cuddle. haha. :D
What does gsd stand for?

Thanks everyone!

Are chows the only type of dog that have those colorings on their tongue?
i am pretty sure that chows and shar peis are the only breeds that have completely purple tongues. i had a chow/lab mix that had three small purple spotts on his tongue. there is a very big chance that he is part chow! he looks like part chow with his thick coat, his tail, and his build.

gsd stands for german shepherd dog. any dog can have purple/black spots on their tongue. tosa inus, shar peis and chows have purple tongues. I have heard of a couple tibetan mastiffs with all purple tongues.

That's neat to know. I always thought Chows were the only ones with purple tongues. I learned something new today. :)

I see Norweigan Elkhound or Keeshond (sp) maybe? Chow/husky would be another good assumption. :)

whats his personality like? besides being a big baby lap dog I mean. does he have high prey drive, is he protective, does he howl?

Around people he doesn't know, he gets pretty skittish for the first few minutes, but I'm assuming that's because he's not used to being around people yet (since he was in a pound for quite a while before the rescue group got him out). Around me though, he's very friendly and quite hyper. haha. He does quite a lot of barking out of my front window when people and dogs walk by. I wouldn’t say he’s too protective though, since he isn't aggressive at all once they get up close to him. He doesn't really howl, it's just little yaps and barks. His voice isn’t too deep either; in fact, my corgi/beagle mix has a deeper voice than Josiah does. lol. But he does do this weird thing that sounds like a sneeze right before he starts barking or before he gets excited. It's really cute. :) I have cats too, and he only wants to play with them; they tend to ignore him most of the time. Sometimes though, my one cat plays with him in the yard; they like to chase each other around. haha. So I'd say his prey drive is very low... if none at all. lol.

I see german shepard, and either husky or malamute (I think I am leaning more towards malamute though). Although I am not good at the mixed breed guessin game though :). He's very handsome and looks like he is very happy with you.

tibetan mastiffs can be easily mistaken for a chow or chow mix.
