9-year old Standard Poodle unable to stand from reclining position

Hello,

I have a 9-year old female Standard Poodle. On Monday night, she attempted to get up from lying down on the carpet next to me, but was unable to do so. She thrashed around and got very agitated, but was not able to move her legs to get to her feet. I held her tightly for several minutes while trying to calm her down. She calmed down a little but started panting and quivering. I kept talking to her and petting her to keep her as calm as possible. After about 15 minutes whe was able to get up and walk around.

I don't know if this was an epileptic episode or not. Has anybody our there in Standard Poodle land had such an experience with his/her Poodle? This is not the first time this has happened to her, but it has been many months since the last experience.

Sounds like a seizure to me.... check with your vet. Why not start a new thread in the Health forum....glad you joined and hope we can help!

It does sound like a seizure to me too. My 4 yo standard, Chloe, had one about 2 yrs ago and then had another one this past Saturday. The 2nd one was much milder than the 1st one and she bounced back much quicker.

When she had the 1st one I took her to the emergency vet who didn't find any obvious reason for it and then to her own vet that Mon. We decided to take a "wait & see" approach to see if she continued having them. Luckily she was seizure free until this past one.

I am going to take the wait approach again & hope they don't become a regular event. If they continue we will do testing to see if he can determine a medical reason for it. Hopefully it won't be necessary because I would prefer not to have to put her on pheno but if it ends up being necessary that is what we will do.

You might want to take her for a check up to see what your vet thinks the best course of action should be.

I'm beginning to think that indeed Nora did have a seizure...again. This is the fourth episode in 2 1/2 years. It's very frightening for her...not to mention me and my husband...but she's the one we worry about. After it happens, she is alert again and ready to play, althugh we avoid that part until the next day...just to give her some rest.

Thank you for your reply. Both my husband and I are convinced Nora's experience was a seizure. Good idea to post it on the Health forum. We are getting increasingly worried as this is the fourth episode in 2 1/2 years. They do not seem to be delibitating outside of the initial experience, but we still worry.

I'll be lurking there ...I really wouldn't worry too much with the time frame. Keep a log as to when the occur and how long they last. When my first Golden had a seizure ... my vet said to monitor and not to worry at that age unless they were cluster seizures.... also the length plus whether or not they loose bladder or bowels control is important. I had one Golden who had mild ones and when he was 12 put him on pheno. My I.B. was something else... up to 4 or 5 a day and basically out of her mind....was a brain tumor.It's a horrible thing to go through ..... for us, I think more than out babies. Keep us up to date!
