 I've been having no luck finding it so far on the web. I have seen one in real life so I do know that they exist...

Chessies and Viszla pups usually get mistaken as Chocolate Labradors as puppies. I hope I answered your question..... :???:

Can you be a little more precise in your description? Like about how tall was it, what color, how much do you think it weighed? Where did you see it?

it was black and labrador puppy shape and about 30cm tall.
I met it in the street twice and both times the owner told me what it was and both times I forgot :o
I think that it was about 5 years old.

ummm, drawing a blank except for possibly a patterdale terrier? 30cm tall is roughly 1 foot tall. some of the cur breeds look similar to a yellow lab, somewhat. patterdale terrier is the only thing I can come up with.

they aren't very common, in the US I think they are most common in the southern midwest (missouri, kentucky, tennessee, arkansas) and the south east...atleast they were in the early 90's when I first heard about them. they are extremely similar to the jack russel terrier in build and temperament, very popular with squirrel and rabbit hunters and with falconers. my brother is a falconer, got his license at 14 (which is awesome because the minimum age is 18...long story) and falconers use small dogs (terriers, beagles etc) to flush rabbits out of thick brush for the hawks to kill. most falconers (I really only know about falconers in Missouri where we lived for 18 years) use jack russels, second most popular is rat terrier, some use patterdales. '
it was probably 1993 when I first saw a patterdale. I'll always remember them because when I first saw one I thought it was a jack russel x lab mix.
okay okay...bunch of useless info.

Huh...then I've probably run across a few and not known it. I live in MO for a few years and 20 minutes from the border for the last 15.

maybe, I wouldnt say they are popular/common, but was told back then that they were more common around there than in most of the rest of the United States.

a flat coated retriever maybe? They are black and look like labs with longer fur.

no, he/she is thinking of a dog that even when it is an adult it resembles a black lad puppy. besides patterdale terrier I cant think of anything but mixed breeds.

Yes I think that it proberbly was the Patterdale Terrier.

It does look like a Lab puppy :) A friend of mine wanted to know what the breed was so I came here to ask the experts.

Its odd that I couldn't find it on dog breeds websites. Like it wasn't listed on the major US dog show as a breed.

I'm supprised that they aren't more popular as Labradors are extreamly popular over here in the UK (blame the Andrex toilet roll company for useing lab puppies in their adverts) which means that people want lab dogs, but don't have the floor space for one.

Actully Flat coats look more like a black red setter... I have compared the two (I own a red setter and I know a flat coat who is a guide dog... actully a compleatly usless guide dog... I wouldn't want to put my life in his paws) and I have found that they are exactly the same shape and size

sheesh, looks like a cross between a black lab and a vizsla with a terrier thrown in. If I had seen it from far off I would have mistaken it for a black lab mix - due to the short tail, its obvious its not a labrador puppy.

yeah it does, looks like a lab mix. but stays really small. weird little dog that to me is just a black jack russel, slightly different build. never had one or speant a lot of time around one so dont know how similar their personalities really are, seemed identical to me though.

The short tail is due to the dog in the photo has had its tail docked. I've seem one with its tail, so it looks more lab like
