Talk to Summer Riot she has a Terv.Very adorable dogs. The Mal was my secong breed choice for Showring.
Beautiful dogs. They need lots of excercise. Great dogs, but not a good choice for a family with kids in lots of activities that results in the dog being unattended a lot, and therefore not able to get it the attention and excercise they need. Very smart.
Smart dog + needs lots of excercise + left alone/not exercised = misbehaving by dog.
SummerRiot's the person to talk to I think.
I don't know too much about them but I think they're awesome looking dogs.

A P.S. from Grammy : I looked up on AKC listing and they are good, devoted family dogs, but should be socialized from day one with handling. If you're really serious about this, I would get the " How to Raise a Puppy you Can Live With " so you can question the breeder as to how they are going about it. I noticed here that one puppy seeker was not allowed to touch the pups until they were 3 or 4 weeks old. It may be the breed, I don't know. I only know my Goldens were gently handled daily from day one.

Hey, i've got a Belgian Tervuren :) I did two years worth of research on finding the best breeder and all about the breed before I went into purchasing little Riot.
They are an extremely intelligent breed to begin with, Riot has been the best dog I have ever trained. You know a dog is smart when they just look into your eye and seem to understand what you are saying to them, and Riot has that down to the tea.
I'm not sure who mentioned it, but they are right - Belgian Tervurens are NOT a dog to be "put aside". They need consistant attention or they become horrible little dogs! lol Because they are highly smart, they develop habits extremely quickly, which can be good or VERY bad!
THey are a good family dog, IF they are introduced to everything as SOON as you get them home, and slowly. They are also a very sensative breed and if you push something on them too fast, they will either turn very aggresive, or very skittish and shy, which in turn can be come aggressive.
They are NOT a good dog for a first time owner. You need to have a consistant hand with them. THey do become overweight fairly quickly though, so you need to monitor everything that they eat.
The Tervurens require excessive exercise, or again, they will develop habits that are usually bad.. lol like chewing, hyperactive pacing, etc etc..
in all honestly, the obedience ring is something that they will THRIVE in with consistant training and work.
I started doing training with Riot from the day I brought him home. Nothing strenuous at first though, just basic "learning his name" stuff, he learned sit fairly quickly, which in turn teaches him manners. Ex. he has to sit, if he wants his biscuit, or sit by the door if he wants out instead of scratching the crap out of it.. sort of thing.
If you want to know anymore more, feel free to PM me or Email me :) jenn_016@hotmail.com
One thing, I did find out with Riot, not directly from me, but from Riots "grandpa"(my dad). hes got a very deep voice so when he gets stern his voice is fairly demanding.. and one day he wanted Riot to show him his teeth, Riot wouldn't so he kept saying "teeth" but getting slightly louder and louder.. Riot did NOT respond to this well, he himself got very loud, snarly and all his hair stood up on end.. so With this breed, I personally found, is a soft touch creates and amazing dog. A rough touch creates a loud abnoxious dog. As soon as my dad softened his voice and asked for his teeth.. Riot quietly opened his mouth without problem.
I also noticed that you do agility I think with your dobe? Tervurens kick butt in this event as well! lol
Edited to add on;
Belgian Tervurens are VERY much a ONE PERSON type of dog. They are very good with family, and people that they know, but they will only work to their potential for one person only. If my mom and I were both giving Riot a command, Riot would turn to me for guidance and ignore my mom (which frustrates her to no end lmao!).
I have found that they are also territorial. if they do not know someone who is entereing their house, they will let that person know to keep distance until I can tell Riot its ok. My sister came into my apartment the other day with a hat on and it was fairly dark in the hallway, well Riot had no clue who she was and when she came in, she didn't say anything. Riot immediately jumped up, all his hair was up on end and he started to growl a bit. When my sister started talking to him he was fine. but keep in mind that they are a protective breed by nature. Anything that is theirs, they will protect, including people.
Not saying that they are an aggresive breed at all.. but it just takes lots of training and consistant reassurance to get them to be like a lab who loves everyone lol

dont know much about them but know someone with malinois. says they are almost the same dog and for a long time were considered one breed (malinois, tervuren, groenendal and lakenois) just called the belgian shepherd. said that occasionally a tervuren will be born in a groenendal litter, or a groenendal to a tervuren litter and I think he said that the same goes for the other 2 as well. not sure if thats correct though, or maybe just in lower quality breedings?

Yup, your correct a Groenendal could be born to a Tervuren, and a Terv could be born to a Groenendal. They are basically seperated by colour.

By the souds of things they are what I am looking for in a breed I remember seening a pair a couple had years ago and they impressed me so much I still remember them till this day they did flyball and obedience with their Tervs though
I know I have had a hard time even finding a breeder that I can talk with about the breed
