Ok I guess this is your first dog? How old was he when you got him?
If he is biting THINGS then keep them out of the way or spray them with a deterent like apple bitter spray (at pet stores). If he is biting YOU then:
a) squeal and act like he has really hurt you then ignore him and stop all play. do this continuously. it takes weeks or longer to teach something.
b) ignore him and walk away
c) if he is an ankle biter pick him up and without saying anything walk him to a time-out room. this will be somewhere safe where he can be ignored. it will not be his crate if he has one. leave him there until he is quiet and when he is quiet for about 10 seconds let him out but don't make a bid deal out of it. if he continues biting continue giving him time outs.
all of these you will have to do even if you are watching tv or sleeping. it has to be done 100% of the time.
--------
as for housetraining. where did he come from? was he in a kennel?
feed him at the same time everyday
keep track (in a journal) of when he eats, pees and poos.
keep him on a leash when he is in the house he will learn to walk on it and you can learn his signs for when he is going to go (he can't sneak off and go)
keep him in a puppyproof area/room/crate when you are not around. it should be somewhere easy to clean. if you are not around you can expect him to go inside. this is normal and it's not his fault.
take him outside every hour (get up in the night to take him out). take him out on a leash and walk him until he goes. when he goes give him TONS of praise and treats. take this opportunity to teach him a command like 'go potty'
NEVER EVER EVER yell at him for soemthing you didn't catch him doing
if you do catch him in teh act throw your keys, clap your hands or do somethign to distract him. take him straight outside
hope that helps

Ok well since you adopted him at 6 weeks instead of the minimum- 8 - you can expect to have some problems with training him. One of the most common one is bite inhibition. this is soemthing their mom and littermates teach them but since he didn't have that time with them he probably missed out on it.
You should have to make a lot of noise.
Tie the leash around your waist if you want to keep him near you

im fat i doesnt fit lol j/p
thanks for ALL that help
lol oh well. it's just a trick that will work for some people. you could/make a movable pen to keep him with you. you need to watch him so he doesn't pee/poo in the apartment.

You can thread the leash around a belt loop or two if it don't fit around you. I would often times thread my leash around a chair leg that I was sitting on to keep the dog by me. Husky's are VERY dominant in nature (not sure about chows). You might really want to look into NILIF (nothing in life is free) training even at this young age so this pup learns to listen very well. Also once your puppy is full immunized socialize them really well and maybe a puppy class at petsmart or wherever wouldn't hurt to help you two bond a little and to help with the socialization process.

I had a chow/malamute mix, he died of old age.
I am certainly not trying to bash any breed, but some characteristics are common in certain breeds. Like huskies are bred for running.
And chow chows can be dominant and food guarding. It really has alot to do
with early training and what not to tolerate.
Since your pup is so young, handling the food he is eating and feeding him a peice here and there from his bowl. This might help to avoid food issues.
Barny my chow/malamute mix was protective of food from other dogs only. I think he would have been worse if I hadn't handled his food and got in his face while he was eating as a young pup. He never had problems with people or children, but he was exposed and used to it as a young pup.
If I had that type of dog now, I would definately do lots of research and use the NILIF training. That dog needs to eat sleep and breath as you as the leader. If you have children they should learn how to use NILIF training too.
Best wishes, and keep asking lots of questions:D
Read, Read, Read. It will help you make better judgements in training.

Im still working with Adrienne on house training and here's what I do.
She's crate trained so as soon as she's let out from her crate around 7am I put her leash on and we go outside and she does her thing. Every 3 to 4 hrs I take her out again and she goes. She still has accidents from time to time but its mostly my fault for not remembering to take her out. When I do go out for shopping etc.. she is put in her crate and she's learned to hold it until I return home to let her out. Same with bedtime. She goes to bed around 10pm in her crate and she'll hold it till 7am.
My best advice for you is to look for signs that your puppy needs to go, like lots of sniffing, going around in circles, then when you recognize the signs you can take your puppy outside or put him on a dog pad before he goes.
As for other training you can take puppy to obedience training or you can work with puppy by yourself. Training pups takes repitition and lots of patience and of course treats to reward your dog for doing a good job. I trained Adrienne within a day to sit and shake with treats. I say "sit" she sits and she's rewarded with a treat. I trained her to sit by having a treat in my hand right in front of her nose and when I lifted my hand up she followed it with her nose going up and as soon as she did her butt sat on the floor and she sat. A trick I leared from Animal Planet ;) They said its a reflex.. the dog follows something up with its nose and it automatically sits. Try it and see what happens :D Good luck with your pup!!
