If you get a crate to fit your puppy when he/she is full grown figure out a way to make it smaller now, before your pup comes home.
Our puppy is 11 weeks and the toy he has a loves are:
Stuffed animals (although he humped those so they have been banned for a while)
Soft ball with a squeeker inside
Kong (we put Yogurt & banana in it)
mini tennis balls
Sqeeky plastic toys
ROPE! He LOVES his rope
Puppy nyla bone - he adores this at night before he goes to bed
Old Towel - he uses this to sleep with and to wrestle with
Definitly read all you can on housebreaking!!
We started teaching come, sit, stay and drop-it right away
Somewhere there is a post about "nothing in life in free" - basically your dog has to do something if he wants anything. So our guy sits (stays) for food, toys, attention etc..
I have found stay really easy to teach, especially at meal time because he doesn't get his good until he sits, stays and waits for me to say "OK". We also do this for going through doors

Wow that's a really good idea on stay. Toki learned to stay at petsmart but he only stays whenever he feels like it. Well actually when there's food involved he would stay. But he won't stay if there's other dogs around or if im leaving out of his sight.

does windex works to puppy-proof the furnitures and keeping him from going back to his pee spot in the floor?
