Hi, every since my black toy poodle has gotten older (he's 5) he's been a little meanie lol. He growls alot, barks alot, gets mad and attacks his tail or foot, and if he's sleeping on the bed with someone and you go in the room or try to lay in the same bed he catches an attitude growls and attacks himself once again. Even if he scratches his ear too hard he'll attack himself.
Can someone tell me why? Or give me advice pleeeeasseee

It may take a bit of time for people to come to this post. Just be patient. I know people here will have some good advice for you and some have poodles.

ok thanks
The change in his personality could be a health problem, or it could just be that he thinks he's the boss. Any way, consult with your vet or a trainer.

Yeah, I think he thinks he's the boss, cause he acts like it. If he doesn't like what Im doing he smacks me with his paw lol. So maybe that's the key.

I don't understand why he'd attack himself if he thought he was boss over you........sounds like a medical issue to me but I'm no expert.

I find him to be a weirdo. If he sees a dog on tv he'll growl then attack himself! I be like Blackie what the hell?! He use to never do that until he started getting older and a little more vicious toward other dogs.

Maybe it's due to stress? I know some dogs will rip out fur when they get stressed so maybe other dogs and not being able to tell you what to do is making him stressed.

Probably, thanks anyway. For now he's still my loveable crazy baby.
How long has he been doing this? If I was you and this was my dog and he started any new odd behavior then a vet check would be in order. Many medical issues can cause a dogs behavior to change. There seems to be more going on then just a behavioral problem if the dog is attacking himself. That's my personal thought of it.

This has been happening for 2 years and the vet said maybe it's ear mites so we got his ear completely cleaned then the vet said maybe he need's to be neutered and that's when I knew my vet was an idiot and no help:cool:

this is what i kinda know:
i have heard that male dogs are more "aggressive" i guess if they arent nuetured, but that doesnt really explain why he would attack himself...hmmm, maybe he is starting to go deaf or something and he just doesnt understand what is happening. so when he goes to itch his ear he ends up starteling himself and attacking himself? i dont know, or maybe he is starting to loose his sight and things are startling him so he gets defensive?
i would try and find another vet who seems to know more.
good luck!

yeah the best idea would be to go to the vet
Find a good behavioralist/trainer and ask them. For the record, the people at places like Petsmart, while enthusiastic, don't know a whole heck of a lot.
You should probably find a different vet as well if you're unhappy with your current one. Wouldn't want something really wrong to happen and you not go to the vet because you don't think it would help.

I would definetely get him checked by a vet. He may be in some sort of pain and that is what is causing him to attack him. He may unknowingly hurt himself and then attack himself thinking he is a threat or something. If the vet does not find anything then I would then reccomend following up with a reputable trainer.
I talked with my boss today and she mentioned two things: canine compulsive disorder (similar to OCD in people) and frontal lobe seizures. Have your vet check those out.

I think that he has OCD, he has all the symptoms...:(
Hopefully, my mom can take him to the vet soon, bad thing is
the vet cost soo much. I wish they had dog medicaid or
any type of dog health insurance lol they're like family 2

They do have dog insurance (well pet insurance actually). You might or might not be able to get your dog on a reasonable insurance plan. We had a husky who had cancer really bad and we tried to get insurance to help us with the chemo and everything but since she was already sick before we applied then we could not get her covered.

Try the ASPCA or some other similar place. They offer low cost treatment to people who are on the poor side.
And this dog should have been neutered 4 1/2 half years ago---I don't know why you think your vet is and idiot for telling you to neuter him.

Really they do? Thanks everyone for trying to help me out.
My vet told me to neuter him last week and I asked isn't he too old to get neutered and she said maybe, that's why I'm gonna switch vets because she's a little on the lost side.
