pup wakes us too early

we have a 6 month old beagle puppy that still wakes us up every morning as soon as the sun comes up. she will lick us, cry and do anything just to get us out of bed. we are very tired we need sleep lol
how do we break her of this early habbit? our male pekingese sleeps late and doesnt make a peep i wish she was like this

My pup does the same, she is like a alarm clock...5.45am ...u will start to feel licks on your face. I usually wakes at 6am for work so she tends to wake slightly before that to wake me. But its annoying during weekends.

With our 4 inevitably one of them is waking us up early. This morning Cocoa Anne woke me up @ 3:00 a.m. to go outside, needless to say all 4 of them went out at 3:00 then back to bed. 6:00 the alarm went off and we were all up again. It really doesn't bother me during the week because I have to get up for work but on the weekends it sucks. One of them usually wakes me up @ 6:00 on the weekends, we go potty and back to bed until around 7:45 then it's up for breakfast. Or sometimes we just eat @ 6:00 a.m. and then back to bed by 7:00 (when we do this we sleep again until 10:00)

I am grateful though that they can generally hold it from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. I think that is a pretty good stretch for a 6 month old and 1 year old. The 2 older guys can go even longer. Neither one of them ever wake me up in the a.m. unless they really really have to go. Then it's licks all over until I get up.

we keep wee wee pads in the bedroom (bad idea?) so i know shes not waking us up to go. maybe she wants to eat? if she wasnt so rough about it then it wouldnt be so bad, but she gets on the bed and kicks us and walks on our back, she scratches at my head with her paws lol its painful, thank heavens shes small lol

lol....seems u have the same pup problem wif me...she will really walk all over me and if my bf is there...she will lick his face so much, if we continue to ignore her, she will stick her wet cold nose under the blanket right into our neck or rib. And she is 15kg ...

We have piddle pads down but they refuse to use them while we are home, they know they are for when we are away. If we are home they will do whatever they need to to get our attention so they can go outside and potty, I guess I should be grateful for that but it sure would be more convenient @ 3:00 a.m. if she would just use the potty pad.... LOL

My dog was waking me up until I enforced the alarm clock rule. I do not under any circumstances get up before the alarm. Toka isn't allowed on the bed (cat's place) and has no problems holding it long enough to wait for the alarm. Now if she wakes up early she does a quiet circuit of the room, then lays back down and sighs. It works on weekdays or weekends, just change the alarm time. It won't work well if your dog isn't housebroken.

Now she has woken me up a few times making very desperate noises, and each time she went out, and came right back in after bathroom time, and went back to sleep until the alarm went off. She knows if she acts desperate enough I'll bend the rule and let her out, but just sighing is not getting me out of bed. :rolleyes:

Once the alarm goes off she is bugging me. :D

i dont even want her in the bedroom! lol
our other dog is not allowed in the bedroom and our four cats arent either, but this little beagle weasled her way in. we put her out and she screams outside our door. she will scratch the walls and instead of having damage i let her in. she has her own dog bed and sleeps in it all night until the sun comes up. maybe i should board up my windows lol
my daughter voluntered to keep her in her room but nope she screamed to get out and be with us.
its funny because we can leave her alone in the day and shes ok with that, its just our bedroom shes obsessed with :mad:

If she is waking you up Bcuz she has to "go" then take her outside..

If it´s just cuz she wants your company then ignore her..

This is what i did .. as long as they were young i would get up and take them out.. when i knew they could hold it and just wanted me to play or hang out with ´em I just ignored them ( i´m not easy to wake ) I put the pillow over my head and went back to sleep. Now none of them would even try to wake me up ,( i dont let them in the bedroom after they are house broken ) but my hubby works nights so he takes them out in around 6 every morning.

Good luck .. If i had to get up early every morning ( for upto 15 years ) i would kill myself.

I agree with RQMama. We just ignored Zeus. Frustrating as it was, we just rolled over and acted like we didn't care. Within the span of a week, he learned that nothing would happen until we were good and ready to get up.

Now if he wakes up before us, he'll find a chew toy, settle next to the bed, and chew and wait patiently for us to wake up.

I like your post! Great idea, too! How is she with the snooze alarm? :D

Tia knows when the T.V. comes on, I'm going to watch a few minutes of news, and then we'll get up. Since she only gets on the bed when asked, and loves her own bed, she can't bug me if she gets a little impatient. I do let her up for snuggle time before I go to sleep or before I wake up. But, I vary it because she's a real "anticipator"!

Yes, the older the dog, the longer they can usually wait.

And I definately know her "I gotta go NOW!' noises, too!;)

My dog used to wake me up at 7am every morning without fail. But of late she only does that on weekends, keeping real quiet on weekdays. I suspect that's her way of trying to keep me at home, by hoping that i'd oversleep.

At times when I do take a nap in the day on weekends, she only allows me to nap for half an hour. After that, she would be at my bedside, whining softly. If I ignore her, she will grow louder and then start barking at me.

I usually get up earlier than that on the weekdays and she's good at reminding me that I shouldn't press the snooze button. It's her job, and she'd be slacking if she slept in ;) Some of your pups sound downright pushy. Do they know that you're in charge? lol :o

My puppy is not content until she has gone around and woken EVERY member of the family.

She scratches, my head, my face, and pulls on my pony tail... OWWWW

I have resorted to going downstairs and laying on the couch while tossing her toys around, so I can get a little more sleep and pretend to be awake to play with her...

Wish she would wait till about 7 or 8, but I still love that cute little face in the morning.

My own dog starts to work on waking me up as soon as the sun peeks over the horizon. I wake up a little, i go back to sleep. If he's really insistent (because he has to go outside), then he will pace and whine until I DO wake up. Generally though he will accept that I am not in the waking mood and he will go back to bed.

This actually works well, this trying to wake me up earlier in the morning, because then by the time my alarm goes off (if i set it - i generally rely on Mojo to get me up) my body is already starting to accept that its' time to move. It's easier for me to get up in the morning if my first alarm is my dog.

Solutions for your problems will probably have to be crate your beagle outside of your bedroom... and ignore her when she cries. She's learned she can control you through whining, crying, and scratching. You now have to teach HER than you are the leaders, and she will have to obey YOUR schedule... not the other way around.

But also cut her some slack - she's a puppy... she has more energy than she knows what to do with. She most likely won't "settle" until she's over the age of 3. She may always be a morning dog, at that.

Why don't you help her out by tiring her out as much as possibel each day? She may settle down more to learn your hours, if she isn't brimming over with excess energy.

Though I have never needed to teach this, my two dogs Cocoa and Marq, will not wake me. If Marq has to sleep in his crate(like last night) and my mom lets him into my room, THEN he will try to wake me up(usually unsuccessfully:p).. I must be weird, but I actually wish my dogs MADE me get out of bed earlier on weekends. Sleeping until 11 everyday is a waste of time... I just usually need to find the motivation to get out of bed! Lol..

Put the puppy in a crate and get earplugs. If you find accidents, then keep getting up for 6 more months and try again. I would still make the dog sleep in a crate.

I ignor them until 6am which is my latest rise time. I put them out and feed then clear out of their way as they play.

Mom is paranoid ever since last year when male did not think she got up fast enough and jumped back on the bed and jack his leg and let her have it.
She spoils them now if I'm not home. She gets up whenever they peep.

I find during the week when I work Teddy is slow to get out of bed to go outside to pee lol and as soon as we come back inside he lays on the couch and goes to sleep until its time to go in his crate. He likes to sleep in :D It's not unusual for him to still be sleeping at 10:30 am lol

Oh yeah....7.28am spot on, like clockwork every day, I hear the patter of eight not-so-little feet around the lounge. I suppose I could ignore it but I have to get up anyway, and once I hear them up I can't relax and go back to sleep. I figure, once they've had enough sleep, they've had enough. They want to get out there and face the day! I let them out with a bowl of bikkies and go back to sleep on the weekends, weekdays I let them out, give them breakfast and get ready for work.

We have a routine though. They wake up, I open the back door, Chester goes straight out, and Ruby sits in the kitchen. I go back, crouch down in front of her, get a doggy hug and a lick on the forehead, and then she goes out. Every day. And I love it! :D

I love waking up with Bailey each morning, and yes, he is a riser with the sun. It is amazing how the sun has recently started coming up earlier with the time change close, but I love our morning routine.

He usually starts stirring about 4 or so, and wants under the covers, so I let him under and he'll put his head on either my back or leg, which is soooo sweet. Then once the alarm goes off, I'll turn on the news and it's belly rubbin' time. We both yawn and give kisses, and moan "do we have to get up", and then I finally say "wanna go outside" "do you gotta go tee tee?", and we're up for the day. Now, weekends I wish he'd sleep in, but unfortunately the sun determines our wake time. And, once he is up, it's no laying back down, but I have triend the couch thing and throwing his toys down the hall...that seems to work.

we have a two year old black lab, Roxie, she's pretty clever, when she wants to wake us up she goes and rattles the blinds..verticals... but she knows to wait to jump up on the bed , not until she gets the invitation..for some morning lovin' then she usually just snuggles down with us (between us) til we get up...now the puppy is an early riser..but that's ok, she's a puppy.

But yeah my boys used to do that too. It does help that they are not allowed on the bed, although they still like putting their front paws on it and licking our face (Tips) or just laying there with the face on our shoulder/back/cheek and pawing at us (Boris). We found the way to make it stop though. We just ignore them. Now when they wake us up it's from playing together and just making too much noise walking on the floor (wood floor), but it's usually after 8am, sometimes even 9 (but sometimes 7 too :( ). Only then when they know we are awake will they put their paws on the bed and ask for cuddles.

They never ask us to go out either so at least they don't wake us up for that. They can hold just fine for 8 hours (my husband usually stays up later than me and I wake up earlier), and even then usually Boris won't go outside right away.

Ruby your post made me laugh, Boris is a lot like Ruby, he usually just sits cute at the door for cuddles instead of going out... Except he does it everytime I let them out (usually every hour or so) and I find it very annoying especially when it's cold out :D So now I just give him a cuddle, go to the bathroom or something then go open the door for him. If the screen doesn't shut he usually goes out by himself though (he knows how to pull and push doors alright).
