Yes Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest breed, but the English Mastiff is considered the largest and heaviest breed.

Mastiffs are much, much heavier than bullmastiffs. Bullmastiffs are not that large...

Bull mastiffs are far from the largest, weight wise. French mastiffs, english mastiffs, st bernards, neo mastiffs, tibetan mastiffs, and many other breeds are bigger than the bull mastiff. The english mastiff is the biggest in the world, irish wolfhounds are the tallest, and the french mastiff has the biggest head out of any other breed.

Dont think they're the biggest but, Tibetan Mastiffs are pretty big.

its funny, I contacted the tibetan mastiff club maybe 6 years ago. they told me that a male tibetan mastiff should be atleast 100 pounds but no more than 175 pounds, its funny because almost every dog book I have read that mentions tibetan mastiffs claims their standard calls for up too 200 pounds. dont know if this is true, or if the standard in america for tibetans may have changed since then because I decided that at that time they werent right for me.
english mastiff, saint bernard and tosa inu are the largest breeds in general, each regularly weighing in at 200 pounds. some american bulldogs reach 200 pounds, read about a saint bernard years ago that I think got replaced in guinness book by that english mastiff, the saint bernard was (if I am remembering correctly?) around 250 pounds. looked obese to me rather than correctly proportioned.

Without sounding to ignorant on the subject, can anyone tell me what the temperment of English Mastiffs and Irisih Wolfhounds is? Are they playful, social dogs? We're thinking of getting another doggie to add to the pack...Lots of space where we live...

dont have either but english mastiffs from what I understand are very similar in regard to temperament to saint bernards. calm and easy going, playfull, gentle good watchdogs. my understanding is that most of their guardian temps have pretty much been bred out though. not positive on that.
I've been told that wolfhounds are very gentle and really love children. not good guard dogs at all except against the occasional coyote. fairly calm but like to run a lot.
both of them you have to be carefull how much you excersice them when they are young or the bones/joints might not grow correctly. sorry I cant help you more. sure theres a few here who can.
