I was at petco today and happenned upon a "Yankee Golden retreiver Rescue" calender. What perplexed me is the appereance of the dog. It had a white face and a golden body. Is there really a breed know as the yankee retreiver or was this a mutt?

Are you sure it wasn't just an elderly golden? As they enter their senior years, their faces turn white with age.

That must be it. I never knew that, thanks Gempress.

Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue is the actual name of the rescue organization.

Yes... you saw a pic of an elder golden with a white face! Yankee is a huge rescue organization. Many goldens get very white very quickly in their face. I'll find a good pic of one for ya ;)

Here's our Rufus I had while growing up. A DEEP, RED coat and totally WHITE face! We used to tell him, "There may be snow on the roof, but there's FIRE in the furnace!!!" :p

Old age was my first thought..some dogs look like they have a creme mask on because the white is so vivid and sharp around the edges!

There's also a good pic of a white-faced Golden on the home page; scroll down until you find the calendar.

EDIT: Which I just now realized is the whole picture that started this thread...

Wow, Nedim. That's quite a white mask on that golden! Sometimes they look like that as early as age 5! My Eli never even got gray hair, which is UNHEARD of. Just a tinge on the face before passing at age 12...

Not to brag (but I am)... this pic was taken about two weeks before Eli died and he was over twelve years old. It's him on the right (Hunter on the left being goofy, of course). Note not much gray on Jessie! (a.k.a. Eli). We used to say he secretly used Glecian Formula (he couldn't pronounce his RRRRR's :p )

Samantha, our "Golden Oldie" that is a boarding regular, is something like 12 years old and has very little white on her face as well. Just a dusting around the muzzle and eyebrows. The poor old girl has HD something terrible, but if you can get her up, she'll just start chugging away with whatever forward momentum she can get.

What's HD?

ETA:
Never mind... I thought a bit and realize Hip Dysplasia! What a sweet girl! Eli never had it, but he was a BIG golden and in his older years, he'd run and gain momentum as he went and I called it his BOOM-chug-a-lug, BOOM-chug-a-lug :p

Grammy and I could go ON and ON!!!!! Weird thing is, this is the first time in my life I haven't had a golden. I just have Hunter now. But he and I are glued to the hip... he's so great! But I'll ALWAYS get another golden. It's just not time yet...

Glad I read this link. I have a 3 1/2 yr old golden, he's getting a little white around hs muzzle. Was thinking that he might be aging prematurely...if that's possible. My sister teases him, calls it very distinguishing...:)

Labs are very similair to goldens though, correct? Are they like cousins or something?(that sounded far less stupid in my mind.lol)

First of all, they're both retrievers. That's like saying the "hound" family... they're in the "retriever" family, but very different in some aspects. Here's how I explain :D

Goldens: NEED attention.
Labs: WANT attention.

Goldens: MUST be touching you at all times.
Labs: WANT to touch you at all times.

Goldens: They must be Catholics – they understand the need to confess their guilt.
Labs: They must be Protestant – What guilt?

Goldens: If they had a job, they’d be a social worker.
Labs: If they had a job, they’d be a standup comedian.

Goldens: If they could speak, they’d constantly say “I love you.” And if you come home and find a lamp is broken, they’d say “Broken lamp? I must have done it. I know I was outside the whole time, but I must have done it. Oh nooo… someone’s unhappy.”
Labs: If they could speak, they’d constantly say “Love me.” And if you come home and find a lamp is broken, they’d say “Broken lamp? I did it. I was having tons of fun. Want to see me break the other one?”

Goldens: Hang on you.
Labs: Body slam you.

Goldens: Long hair in your food, on your clothes, on your couch.
Labs: Shorter hair in your food, on your clothes, on your couch.

Goldens: Brush daily.
Labs: Wash and wear!

i am assuming you are in new england.

YGRR is a golden retriever rescue. its not a different type of golden.

the dog on the front is an old golden - hence why it has a white face.

Yeah dogs start to get a white as they get older. Here's May -

Labs can also have white markings on their chests. May has always had a perfect little upright white arrow. It's so cute :D
