Why is it called a German Shepherd Dog and not just a German Shepherd?
The only reason I can think of, and it sounds ridiculous to me, is that at one point two people were talking about a German Shepherd and one was talking about the dog and the other about a German man who was a Shepherd and somewhere along the way someone got offended.
So they tacked on that extra 'dog' at the end. Which makes no sense to me cause people still just say "German Shepherd".
So is there a reason for the 'Dog' to be at the end or what?

So I'm assuming you know something we don't? Care to enlighten us?

The reason it's like that is because it's the EXACT translation from German, with "dog" at the end.

Would you happen to have the German translation?

Why are they also known as alsation?

Because although they were a very popular breed in Great Britain, things of Germanic origin fell out of favor in Europe there for awhile (had to do with some war nastiness ;) ), so the Brits changed the name to "Alsatian." At least that's the account I've read in several places.

They want to make sure you know it is a dog and not a german shepherd man!

the breed's german name is "deutscher schäferhund", referring to "the dog of the german shepherd". "hund" means "dog".
actually calling it "german shepherd's dog" would be more correct, since "schäfer" is the german word for shepherd and the reference is to the dog of the shepherd, not to the shepherd himself.
if you just call it a "german shepherd", you'd be referring to the person or profession. :)
for those who don't know - i'm german, by the way. :)

I have German heritage, know 'nein' means no and 'zex' means six.
But that's as close as I get.
Oh and I now know that "schafer" means Shepherd, 'hund' means dog (or hound, which is what I derived it as initially), and 'deutscher' means German.
Pretty soon I'll be fluent O.o

Who knows. Micheal Jackson has done some weird "stuff" (stupid filter) in his life (looked at him recently?)
No telling what kind of crap he'd cook up to become even more of a media "girl who gets around a lot" (again, stupid filter).

You pretty much hit the nail on the head dude.
It's only 1:25 AM here but I have noticed that I'm starting to slip into that delusional phase where everything is funny and you look at your posts (or friends) the next day and go "what the hell was I thinking?"

This seems like a fun post:D I loved reading everyone's posts.
Just to continue, I was curious as to all the breeds (in CKC) with the word dog after the name. I found:
Porturguese Water Dog - I suppose if you just said Porturguese Water...well you would think of a body of water in Porturgal. A person born in Porturgal is also called Porturguese.
Karelian Bear Dog - without the dog I would think of those furry bear creatures.
Catahoula Leopard Dog - obvious
Canadian Eskimo Dog - while also obvious, we do still have eskimos in Canada:)
Bernese Mountain Dog - scenery or dog
Bobtail Catahoula Leopard Dog - same reason as the type that is not bobtail
Anatolian Shepherd Dog - same reason as the German Shepherd
Akbash Dog - Akbash must be a region? Country?
Canaan Dog, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, Greenland dog etc etc.
Now, just in fun it's my turn to point out that the United States assume their breed the American Eskimo would never be mistaken for a human eskimo. Possibly because they do not have any orginal eskimo human races living in their country?:D
And Canada, come on...just calling the breed a Newfoundland..?? some may picture the province first until some one says dog afterward. Then we owners shorten the name to Newfie...we also call the people of Newfoundland Newfie's, or even Newf's....so, what are we implying about our people in Newfoundland?:D

We are implying that they are nice warm big fuzzy dogs.:D
Well maybe not but that is not a bad comparission either. I think it because some smarty pants decided that the average joe was unable to determine if the critter was indeed a dog. If we say dog at the end then the newfie's, [joking] will know it is the dog and not them we are talking about.
That is the end of my sarcasium and my wit for today. Back to bed for me!
