View Full Version : CJ is not herself and I'm worried

CJ is already 12 years old and is not herself. She's been slowing down some and her face is getting grey faster. We notice her face even seems thinner. We both have a feeling that she is winding down (cry, cry, cry). For the past 4 days, she no longer wants dog food. We always give her kibble & wet with some cooked chicken. She picked out most of the chicken and left the rest. I even cut up another piece of chicken so she would eat, which she did. I tried giving her the bones she likes, but she didn't want them. Last night was the same thing again. Later on I made a hamburger with a little kibble and she ate it! She even took a bone!
She seems very sad at times and doesn't want to be pet so I leave her alone. Other times she is happy but not the same.
CJ has bad hips, fatty tumors, and arthritis. We are doing the best we can for her. I guess I'm not asking for advice, I just needed to talk. Carl broke down crying yesterday saying that he can't lose her.
I truly hope she turns around, but I'm loving her as much as she will let me. If her eating doesn't get better (I'm going to make homemade food if that's what it takes for her to eat), we will take her to the vet to check her out.
Thanks for listening. Barb
OH Barb, that's so tough. I hope she turns around too! I'm glad you are feeding her whatever she'll eat. Keep us updated. I'll be thinking about you guys.

It's so hard to see them age. Enjoy the days you have and make her comfortable.

I am so sorry to hear that news. Nothing is harder than watching the ones we love slow down. Dogs deserve only the best and I know that is what you are giving CJ. Try to focus on how lucky you have been to have your dog for as long as you have. That is truly a blessing that your dog has been with you for a long life. It is still so hard to let go. I wish all my dogs would outlive me, I would be much happier...
On another note, I would also recommend you give her whatever she wants to eat. The chicken is good and rich in protein. I would also offer some diluted gatorade. Keeping CJ hydrated will help her feel more active and happy. I have even mixed canned chunk chicken (juice included) with cooked oatmeal in the past for one of my dogs. They like the flavor and it's nice and gentle on the stomach.
Take care and I wish you the best :) :(

Well so far she is eating some chicken. We even took a hamburger pattie and cooked it. I mixed it in with a little of the kibble and she ate it (happy, happy). For whatever reason she has changed what she wants to eat, so I'm following her lead. It's now cooked chicken, hamburger and a little kibble.
She seems a little more lively which is making me happy. There are times she still looks a little sad so I give her ALL my love!!!!!
Thank you everyone for your kind words. CJ has been with me for over 12 years, I've helped her through many operations, and she's been my best buddy when I had to go through my divorce (tears and all). She's my pal that I hope will live forever, if that was possible.
Showpug, thanks for the tips on feeding.
I'll be sure to let everyone know how she's doing.
Thanks again.

That's good to hear, Barb. You know CJ's not going anywhere until she's satisfied that Kona can watch over you for her :)
