I found an odd lump on my new puppy's stomach and took him to the vet. Apparently, he has had some kind of hernia which led to a fat pack (????). The vet said that we don't have to do the surgery, but it could get dangerous if it gets bigger? Does anyone have an idea what this vet is talking about? Do I need to do the surgery?

my Girl had one of those and I let it go till I had her spayed
she was 3 years old

some say the mom chewed the cord too close and this is what causes them but I believe is hereditary

Chloe also had a hernia when I picked her up from the breeder. I asked our vet too and he also said not to worry about it unless it got larger. He said they would repair it when they spayed her which is what we did when she was 6 months old.

What your dog has is called an umbilical hernia and yes it is caused by the mother dog chewing the umbilical cord off to close to the skin. This is why a lot of breeders clip the cords themselves. Anyway, a hernia can be serious and it can be life threatening. There is a small chance that a part of the intestine can get stuck in the gap and get pinched. This can kill your dog. It is best to have the hernia repaired when the dog is spayed or neutered around 6 months.
