View Full Version : pyran -dewormer
Is this a good one? I opted for the cheap option. She wanted to sell us another dewormer at $7.50 a pill (and maverick would need 4) or these for $1 a pill (and mav would only need 2). She said the only difference was that the expensive ones did tapeworms and the others didn't. Mav has had tapeworms before  so I know what to look for and am not that worried about them. So... good decision?

If your only concern is Round and hookworms then the wormer you choose is great. I use Strongid-T which is a Pyrantel pamoate wormer...but, I usually do my first worming with Drontel plus then follow up in 2 weeks with the Strongid-T as you have to worm twice for round worms and hookworms. ;). The reason I always use the Drontel plus first is because it kills Roundworms
Hookworms, Whipworms, Taeniid tapeworms, Flea tapeworms, Echinococcus granulosus tapeworms. A person in my area just lost her dog to whipworms, the only indication was the dog had diarrhea, the dog was quite old and the owner thought that by fasting the dog it would take care of the diarrhea. The dog would go back to normal bowel movements, then get diarrhea the owner would fast again and the cycle continued. Finally the owner took the dog to the vet where they took a fecal sample...the dog had whipworms and due to being starved, malnourhished due to worms and fasting the dog had nothing left to fight with and died. It was very sad, so now when I worm I worm for all types of worms twice a year. ;) I use the more expensive wormer first then the cheaper Strongid T 2 weeks after the first treatment to kill any larvae of the roundworms. ;). It makes me feel safer as I may be able to see Tapeworms, I cannot see the other types of worms that the Pyrantel wormer doesnt kill.
Is that your Newf in your post? Just wanted to compliment you on your dog, very beautiful. :)
I have 3 Newfoundland dogs, if you want to take a peak at their pictures they are on the chazhound picture forum under my name.

I don't see where it says Panacur treats Heartworms. A heartworm medication has to be given monthly and yes there are wormers like Interceptor®, that kills Heartworm, some mites and hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms and Sentinel which kills Heartworms hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms; prevents flea eggs from developing. There are others (Revolution, HeartGuard, etc) but Panacur was not mentioned for treating Heartworm. I don't think Saje was looking for a monthly heartworm medication, just something to kill roundworms. That's my take on it anyway. ;)

Fenbendazole (Panacur®)
Fenbendazole is a medication used to treat infestations with many parasites including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. It may also be used in the treatment of flukes and Giardia. Side effects are rarely seen. In addition to treatment, elimination of parasites must also include proper sanitation and prevention measures to ensure the pet does not become reinfected.

Fenbendazole is available over the counter.
Panacur and Safeguard contains fenbendazole and is used in both large and small animals. In dogs, it is useful against roundworms, hookworms, and the more difficult to treat whipworms. It is effective against the Taenia species of tapeworm but not against the Common tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. It is also effective against giardia, a protozoan and several species of lungworm and even some flukes. I use Fenbendazole on my dogs as a broad wormer. I think it is the best. But it does not kill heartworms. And does not kill all tapeworms.
Treatment is necessary for three consecutive days. Treatment may require a second course depending on which parasite is being treated, like roundworms require a second dose in about two weeks.
Praziquantel is now available over the counter.
The active ingredient is praziquantel with different name brands.
This kills both types of tapeworms in a single dose.
Pyrantel Pamoate is available over the counter.
I like this one for young pups (then at about 6 months I start using Fenbendozale). Pyrantel Pamoate kills rounds and hooks. Pup needs second dose two weeks later.
It is a good wormer. But will not kill as many kinds as Fenbendozale.
This can also be used for cats although you probably won't read that anywhere. But it is what alot of vets use for cats(pyrantel pamoate).
Also keep in mind that if you dog is on heartworm preventative alot of them contain meds for hooks and rounds.
