In the past 2 weeks, my 12 week-old beagle Muddy has been getting worse and worse at barking and howling. He barks and whines to the following things: when he's on the leash and can't get to something that he wants to chew or explore, when we crate him and leave (or even stay in) the room, when he's in his playpen (with toys) and we leave (or stay in) the room, basically when he doesn't get his way. We try very hard to never give him what he wants when he's barking about it. I was thinking that maybe we DO give him what he wants, but he just thinks that it takes time. Like when he's barking for attention, he'll go for a few minutes, and once he's done, I come and praise him for being quiet. You think that he thinks that those minutes of barking eventually lead him to what he wants? Help please!

You think that he thinks that those minutes of barking eventually lead him to what he wants? Help please! Only if getting what he wants comes very soon after he stops....like within 5 seconds. Once he's been quiet for 5 or 10 seconds, he should associate the reward with the being quiet. Just be sure to be consistant and not give any kind of attention, not a look, a word...nothing until he is quiet. You can also try distracting him, once he's quiet and giving another obedience task...re-direct him, in other words and praise/treat for that. Show him what brings your attention and reward and what doesn't. Stay with it. Miracles don't happen overnight. LOL.
