When I got home from work it was nice and warm and sunny out so I decided that I was going to take the dogs for a walk in the cemetary. We start out on our walk and we have to walk along a main street on the sidewalk and there's grass on one side of the sidewalk, which I have the dogs walk in because I don't want them to be right next to the street.

So, they are walking and all of a sudden Rosco starts to tuck his back foot up underneath him and start limping and hobbling along, so I stop the dogs and I check Rosco's foot and he had a tiny shard of glass sticking out of his pad, so I picked out the glass and we turned around and went home.

As soon as we got home I put Rosco up on the bed and started checking out his pad, there was no more glass in it and I couldn't see any marks where the glass was, so I cleaned his pad with hydrogen peroxide and then with warm water.

After I picked out the glass and we were walking home he wasn't limping around or anything and once I cleaned his foot he wasn't limping anymore.

My question is, was it okay to use peroxide on his foot? I am definetly going to keep an eye on his paw and make sure there's no more limping and that it doesn't get infected. Should I continue to clean his foot with peroxide tonight? If I shouldn't be using peroxide what else can I use to make sure that his paw is kept clean? And, how can I be sure that I got all of the glass out? Thanks ;)

It's fine to use, same as us. all it does is change to oxygen and water. it just flushes any debris out. You can use most of the same stuff that we use (check w/ vet 1st for anything that is a NO NO). One major thing is to make sure that all the glass is out. After you are sure it's all clean. You can even get this stuff at petsmart, it's blue, it wil clean it and disinfect the wound. Also if it is deep or you aren't sure if all the glass is out go see a vet. If it's just a little cut then this is ok. Finally after it is clean and had some time to begin healing then put neosporine (sp?) one to promate healing. Just like us it is good to have some time w/ direct air contact. Try to make sure that they don't eat it. They like to lick wounds. If it if deep or still bleeding the vet might 1st make sure all the glass is out (a small piece could be recutting the area) and 2nd put on surgical glue (basically superglue), then have you use neosporine on the wound.
Mira jsut had this (they cut her nail too far and cut her other pad). It's healing very nicely.
Keep us updated

Well, so far so good, I think the glass is out and his pad is fine. I've been keeping an eye on his pad and he's not limping, there's no swelling or bleeding or any visible cuts that I see. I gently pressed all around his pad and he didn't cry or pull back and I didn't feel any bumps so I think I was lucky this time! Thanks for the advice and concern aurorab!!
