Today Hannah had what looked like a seizure. She was shaking around on the floor and then she threw up. SHe has done that two days in a row (just once a day though). Then tonight she peed in her crate when I went to take Lily outside. The crate was clean then when I went to open the cage I noticed it was soaked. Could what I described earlier be a seizure? and if it is could her accident in her crate tonight be from whatever is causing the seizures (if anything is)? I'm frustrated and worried about her, I don't know what is going on with her she has a vet's appointment tomorrow morning though and she'll have to stay for a day :( .
Oooh...that doesn't sound very good. Let us know and I'm hoping for the better outcome...she ate something that hasn't agreed with her?

she just got cow tongue introduced in her diet, could that maybe be it? I just don't know if that could have caused her to pee in her crate and do the seizuring and vomiting. I'm just worried now.
Maybe it's just a very bad allergic reaction and all you have to do is quit feeding tongue?

I hope so. I'm so worried. I won't let her by Lily incase it's something contagious (doubtful but can't be too careful). I don't want to be without her for the day but I have to.
:(
On a happier note, I sent home a black poodle puppy that has the exact same haircut as Lily...does her coat feel like suede to you now? This pup kept shaking his head to make sure his ears were still there too...his coat had been so long and heavy before that he must feel like there's gravity now!

oh yeah she's really soft now. SHe got a bath with conditioner today so she's soft and smells good. I think she feels better with all her fur gone too. Now she runs around with her tail up.

she's at the vet's they want to keep her all day and night to observe and see if she does the seizuring for them too. He really wants to see what her seizures look like. I'm so worried about her I dropped her off this morning and now I can't see her ALL day or night. I'm so lost without her :(.

The urine in her crate could have been from a seizure. When they have seizures they sometimes loose control of their ability to hold urine. On another note, be a little cautious before you let your vet medicate her with phenobarbitol. Once they are put on it, they become dependent and need it to prevent seizures. It also takes a toll on their energy level and their personality (at least temporarily.) If she needs it, she needs it but if it is truly seizures then I would consider removing all the gluten from her diet and then seeing if that stops them (works wonders in many dogs.) Either way, I wish you luck and I wish Hannah a full recovery.

thanks :) . Is there a special diet that I would have to put her on to remove the gluten? I haven't heard anything from the vet yet, which makes me mad, they were suppose to keep me updated and let me know how she was doing after two o'clock. I guess I'll have to call them, they are usually good about not forgetting to call though.

So I called the vet's office to check up on Hannah and they forgot to call me! The vet PROMISED to call before he left the office and he forgot and had already left. So the ladies at the front desk had no clue what I was talking about or what was going on and just said "oh yeah she's doing fine" without even checking I don't think. So I hung up, called back, and asked to speak to the vet on duty. So I talked to the other vet (which I don't like) and he said everything was fine that our usual vet didn't notice anything unusual with her and she didn't show any signs of being sick. Well atleast she was ok today, that's a relief. I wonder if maybe something at this house is making her sick because I asked if she had been gagging and trying to hack stuff up and he said no. I'm confused, maybe it's this house.

Julie, I will let you know that although she was at the vet all this time for "observation" chances are that there was not someone with her 24/7. If she was being watched like she needed to be then the vet would not have forgotten about her or you. Trust me, I worked in a clinic for 5 years...I know what really goes on. You may want to pick her up and take her home and if you have a video camera keep it ready and tape the next episode. We had clients do that on occasion so we could see what was taking place at home.

Gluten exists in wheat, corn, soy and dairy products. You would need to make sure that the food contains zero of the above ingredients. It would also be vitally important to make sure she never gets a taste of your other dog's food or table scraps that have the above in them. Remember, it may not say wheat as the ingredient it may say flour etc. You are also in luck timing wise if this is something you want to try because Solid Gold is coming out with a new diet that is totally gluten free and grain free. It is called "barking at the moon" adult maintenance. They have a nice line of foods, but I imagine this will be a really good one. You can't find it anywhere yet, so be patient.

Julie, I'm sorry to hear Hannah's having a problem. :( Hopefully it was something that has passed never to be repeated! I know how worried you must be! Prayers & good thoughts headed Hannah's way!

i absolutely agree with showpug... i also have worked in a vet office and the chances of something happening in the clinic is very unlikely.... and i would do exactly what show said

Unfortunetely I got to this post too late so they are already closed for the night :(. I like the idea of getting her and taking her home though. Maybe it was a freak thing though and she'll be ok from now on though. We never noticed anything like this happen to her before just to past couple days. I can pick her up first thing in the morning though and I will be there right when they open their doors.

well I hope she is doing okay... i think there is a reason it happened but what it is is a different story... and Im not a fan of thinking that it was a freak incident because seizures are freak incidents..

well Hannah is back home and hasn't had a seizure in two days. So I'm guessing that is good. The vets couldn't find anything wrong with her though. I'm still concerned because she is hacking and gagging like she is trying to throw something up and can't get it out. I brought that up to them but she didn't do that there either. I am starting to think maybe it is the floor cleaner that I am using or something because after I mop and it's dry Hannah will sometimes lick the floor. Maybe I should switch to something else and see if that helps her at all. I'm now VERY confused and worried.

When Cocoa had her seizure it happened within an hour after we purchased a new sectional couch and they delivered it. She seized on the couch, lost total control of her bowels and bladder all over the new couch. That was in June and has never happened again. People tell me the new couch is what caused it.

The trying to hack something up and gagging is kennel cough. That is exactly what it sounds like. People expect a cough, but instead it sounds like something stuck in the dogs throat. It gets worse at night or when they are more active. Chances are it didn't happen at the vet's because she was not active and in a kennel all day...

Poor Hannah, I hope she will be ok. I don't have any suggetions, but I hope you are able to determine the cause of the problem.

How do they get kennel cough? She's had this for awhile but I just noticed lately it has gotten worse. I mentioned it to the vets and they didn't do anything (atleast not that I was told about or charged about). She doesn't hack alot at night just when she gets drinking lots of water and playing. I'll have to take her agian, maybe to someone new this time. Should I keep her and Lily seperate? Lily has had her bordatella shot and Hannah got it when she was spayed but should I keep Lily away from Hannah until Hannah can get to the vets? I don't notice Lily doing the hacking and gagging yet though.

Has she had a heartworm test?
Sometimes that will produce a cough.

yeah, they tested her for heartworm while at the vets. She is on heartworm preventative year round anyway but could she still get it? I Think the dog flu does mimic the kennel cough and lots of dogs were being treated for normal kennel cough because that is what the vet's thought that it was. Paranoia setting in :( .

Well I wouldn't be worried about heartworm then, you took all the precautions.
I am not really familiar with kennel cough, but I thought it is very treatable??
Do a google and try to find some info on it.
I think it is really contagious. Was she exposed at the vets at an earlier appt.??

Kennel cough is an airborn virus. It is doggy bronchitis and will go away on it's own as long as the dog does not develop a secondary infection. They get it from other dogs, it's airborn. They can get it from going to the vet's office, doggy daycare, the park, the neighbors dog coughing nearby...the list is endless. It is very common and vets will usually try to treat it with a cough suppressant and antibiotics, but it's not an infection, so the antibiotics won't help. The best cure is time. As far as the vaccination goes, it can help them get a more mild case, but the vaccine is weak and doesn't do squat in my opinion. All of my dogs have had kennel cough after being vaccinated several times. Now they are immune to it. I would go to another vet that takes your concernes more seriously. Any kind of coughing, especially when excited can be caused by kennel cough or a heart problem or something as simple as drinking too fast or a piece of hair tickling their throat.

I forget, what kind of dog do you have? The reason I ask is because in my yorkie (prone to collapsed trachea) she does the same thing when she drinks and when she plays and runs alot.. It sounds like she is trying to hack up a furball or something. It usually lasts less than a minute
