maybe I would try that one day, sort of add it in to my kennel you know, I like the sound of it. any info? where, how, how long does it take???
The courses vary in length. The grooming courses they offer in my area are usually one year. Make sure you work with a professional groomer when you first start out as you will never learn all you need to know in a course. Make sure the groomers teaching are National Certified Master groomers, and it's also nice when a teacher has won compititons. I would also make sure the teachers teach you the "proper" grooms and then go from the proper grooms to pet grooms. You should know how to do proper clips for each breed...then the customer will decide if they want a different clip. We get all kinds of people with mixed breeds who want their dog to look like a schauzer or poodle.
The reason I mention this is we just had 2 girls graduate from a local grooming course. My sister hired one girl, the teacher taught them to do all poodle heads like a bichon and basically told the girls that all customer's like are puppy and kennel clips. These girls forked over big bucks to learn to groom like this teacher who had her own style...they did not learn one proper clip. My Sister had to retrain the girl she hired (my Sister is a National Certified Master groomer and has competed in Toronto). She also made sure the girl went to dog show to learn her breeds one of the girls didn't know what a soft coated wheaton was! The other girl who didn't know her breeds was hired by a pet store, the manager had her sent to my Sister to be trained on how to groom...this girl just finished a grooming course and did not even know how to hold a dog properly on the table. Very sad

What I did was take a correspondence course. It took me around 3 or 4 months to complete. After that, I practiced at home on friends' and family dogs. Then, I was trained under a pro groomer. After that, I began working ony my own. Athe is right. There are not just one or two types of clips. There are several clips and variations on those clips. Some owners will ask for a "Royal Dutch" cut. Some will make up their own and tell you how they like their dog clipped. Those are the hard ones. LOL But anyway, you could also go work at PetSmart or PetCo and they will put you through grooming school. Just research and make sure you make the right choice. I am proud of the choices I made, but there are many more choices you could make. A great website to get you started is petgroomer.com Lots and lots of info there for you.

You can take a grooming course and yeah they vary in length I know someone who did one that took six months. I'm doing it on the job, being trained by a very good groomer. I recommend trying to learn on the job, but make sure you are being trained by a really good groomer, because you will definately learn an awful lot more about grooming doing it for real than in a classroom, I would imagine.
